Title: NYIT Program of English as a Second Language The ESL Program

1
NYIT Program of English as a Second
Language (The ESL Program)
2
Goal of the ESL Program
  • As an international or bilingual student
  • You get acquainted with American English while
    studying for your major.
  • You get training in English writing in order to
    fulfill successfully your school requirements.

3
Population of the ESL Program
  • International students holding an F1 (Student)
    visa.
  • Students residing in the US and who are learners
of English, using English as a second language.

4
The ESL Placement Test
  • The Departments of English at NYIT campuses
    administer the ESL Placement Test.
  • The score you get on the test will determine
which entry level is best for you.

5
Credit and Non-credit Levels
  • The advanced credit level is College Composition
    I for International Students.
  • The remedial credit level is Basic Reading and
    Writing for International Students.
  • A large number of non-credit courses are also
    available in the school.

6
Exiting the Program
  • The ESL program therefore consists of three
courses. The remedial course and the college
composition course represent the two levels at
which you can be placed upon taking the ESL
    Placement test.
  • To exit the program you must also take College
Composition II for International Students, which
is an introductory course to literature and to
    research writing.

7
Multicultural Literature Courses
  • After exiting the ESL program, you can still take
one of the many multicultural literature courses
that the Departments of English offer
    periodically in their programs.
  • These courses deal with a range of world
    literatures, such as Chinese-American literature,
    Irish literature, and Arab-American literature,
to name but a few. The literature of US
immigrants from all over the world is a common
    focus of these courses .

8
Web-enhancement
  • Most courses in the ESL Programs are
    web-enhanced.
  • You can access your class materials and documents
from the web. You can discuss a topic with your
class, and submit your class assignments through
    the web.
  • You can use e-mail to connect to your instructor
    and to your class.
