What is Zoology?
  • Zoology is the scientific study of animals.
  • Originated when life was classified into two
    kingdoms (Plantae and Animalia)
  • Into how many kingdoms is life classified today?
  • What do we mean by scientific study?

How do we study Zoology?
  • Combine phylogenetic and comparative systems
    approach.
  • Phylogenetic - examine each animal taxon, its
    characteristics and representative members. (Lab
    - Phylum of the Week)
  • Comparative - compare the functional adaptations
    of animal groups. (Lab - examine morphology (and
    function) of systems in several groups
    simultaneously)
