Title: FundRaising Committee

1
Fund-Raising Committee
Be encouraged! The sponsorship
for our Women Build project is out
there!
2
Fund-raising CommitteeIt takes a coordinated
campaign to avoid using resources the affiliate
may already have designated for other projects.
When devising a list of potential donors, work
closely with affiliate members responsible for
fund raising. This will help you avoid targeting
the same ones.
  • .
  • DEVELOPMENT PLAN
  • - Be clear about what you are going to request
in either cash or product donations. Work with
    construction
  • staff/volunteers to establish a list of
materials. If you are planning a blitz build, is
    this committee also going to
  • seek donations for meals, tents, etc? Or will
this be left to the Food Service committee? If
    the Food Service
  • committee is going to solicit donations, make
sure the two committees dont approach the same
    potential
  • donors with two requests. You will only annoy
the donors and most likely fail in securing any
    donation from
  • them.
  • - Decide on what you will pay for. If there is
a women-owned business you would like to see
    involved in the
  • project, but that is not in a position to
donate at this time, dont alienate the owners by
    pushing for a donation.
  • They will appreciate the opportunity to work
on the project and will be more inclined to
    donate at a later
  • stage.
  • - Dont compromise the project by asking for
too little. A Women Build project has tremendous
    fund-raising
  • potential.
  • - Encourage larger donors to give over a period
of time. This will keep your donors connected for
    future projects

3
Establish donor levels early on. Develop a
system that records and thanks donors without
offending the large or the small donor.
Recognize donors according to the level of
their donation.
  • An example of this is
  • Golden Hammer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
    10,000 and up
  • Name and logo on main site sign, display
banner at the house, name on T-shirts, x number
    of
  • guaranteed volunteer places on house,
photo opportunity with celebrity, recognition in
    affiliate
  • newsletter, etc.
  • Silver Hammer. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

  • Name on main site sign, x number of
guaranteed volunteer places on house, display
small banner at the house during construction,
    recognition in affiliate newsletter, etc.
  • Master Carpenter . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

  • Locate
    organizations, universities or businesses that
    are run by women.

  • Target sororities and
womens organizations like the Frederick County

  • Commission for Women.
Once a list of potential donors has been

  • established (and it has
been verified that the affiliate is not
    approaching

  • any of these), divide
the list and assign to different members.

  • Remember, if a
committee member knows a potential donor
    personally,

  • she is likely to have a
higher rate of success in obtaining a positive

  • response.
  • Start early! Once you have defined your goal,
your build dates and a list of the materials and
    cash donations to
  • solicitgo to it! Raising funds will always take
    longer than anticipated.
  • Identify people who can introduce committee
members to potential donors. Prioritize. Whom do
    you want to contact
  • first?
  • Decide on how you will approach each donorin
writing, with a phone call or through a personal
    contact. If you
  • choose to approach a potential donor in writing,
describe what Habitat is/what your affiliate has
    accomplished within
  • the community/what your particular goal/project
is and be clear in your request. Direct the
    letter to a particular person.
  • A letter sent addressed to whom it may
concern is apt to go unanswered. Follow the
letter with a phone call a

grant applied for award determination by 10/31.
Following is a list of fund-raising ideas to
consider and expand upon

  • "Build a fund-raiser" -- Some affiliates have
raised money by building -- and auctioning off
a garden shed or playhouse. In the building
designs, affiliates have incorporated as many
construction techniques as possible. This also
    gives volunteers practical building experience
before construction begins on the actual Habitat
house. Seek as many donations of the building
materials as possible. Once construction is
completed, you can raffle the shed or playhouse
off. One womens group raised 17,000 with their
large, luxury playhouse. Each raffle ticket cost
10 and they received excellent publicity as they
moved it to various sites to display it.
  • Take advantage of a special day, such as Mothers
Day or Thanksgiving. Ask people to donate in
honor, or in memory, of a woman who has made a
significant contribution in their lives. You will
need to check with the affiliate to see if you
can send a mailing to their database entries. If
that is possible, it would be a good place to
    start this campaign.
  • HFH New Haven womens build members found a way
their spouses and other men could contribute.
They established a mens auxiliary which held a
bake sale the day before Valentines Day. More
than 85 men, including New Havens mayor, raffled
off their homemade baked goods - the bake sale
    brought in 7,500.
