Melissa
Melissa is a post 16 student taking a Foundation
Diploma in Hair and Beauty studies. She is a very
down to earth, practical person although she
thinks she would like to be a hairdresser she
sees hairdressing not so much as an opportunity
to demonstrate creativity and artistic flair, but
as a matter of running a business. She wants to
learn how to run a business successfully, so she
decided as a first step to take the Hair and
Beauty Diploma. She understands she will need to
complete a vocational qualification if she does
decide to be a hairdresser.

Work experience
Project
Melissa had two separate work experience
placements two weeks in a beauty salon where she
spent most of her time maintaining stock records
and ordering supplies, and ten days in a
hairdressing salon where she was involved mainly
in reception duties. In the light of her
experience she decided she much preferred the
customer-facing aspects of hairdressing, It also
led her to realise how much the success of a
salon depended on skills in dealing with people
and maintaining good customer relations.
For her project Melissa researched business
aspects of a hairdressing salon. She based her
project on an actual vacant business premises
near her college. She obtained accurate
information on all the costs (leasehold rental,
equipment, fitting out, stock, insurance, and
wages) and with the help of her tutor analysed
the likely customer profile and a projected
revenue. She presented her findings as a
word-processed report with spreadsheet financial
data.
Progression route Melissa achieved good results
in her Diploma and decides her next step should
be to take a vocational qualification, the City
Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing Salon
Reception. She will work towards this while
working part-time as a trainee in hairdressing
salon.
