Black Liquor Gasification Fluidized Bed
Reactor Skigh Lewis, Kristin Hecht, David
Dunaway, Dr. Larry Baxter, Dr. Dale TreeA joint
work between the University of Utah and Brigham
Young University
Objectives
Develop a prototype bench scale fluidized bed
reactor Measure temperature and pressure
profiles in the reactor Determine operating
windows in terms of temperature and bed
composition Determine effects of different bed
constituents (CaCO3, NaSO4) on agglomeration
Develop a simple model of a fluidized bed
gasifier Develop a reactor that will be used to
measure properties of a fluidized bed, including
pressure and temperature profiles
Progress to date 1) Determined minimum
fluidization velocity and corresponding flow
rates for bench scale reactor 2) Calculated
theoretical pressure drop for bench scale
reactor at ambient conditions 3) Observed
fluidization conditions at different flow rates
using sand comprised of 100-1000 micron
particles as the fluid bed
Fluidized bed 50-300 micron particles
Fluid bed prototype 100-1000 micron
sand particles
Prototype initial fluidization at 4 ft3/min
