Title: Conversion of Units

1
Conversion of Units
  • Mathematics 11 Chapter 2 Reading ( p19 p24 )

2
Metric Units of Length, Mass and Capacity
  • In the International System of Units ( SI ) each
physical quantity - length, mass, volume, etc is
represented by a specific SI unit.
  • basic unit the metric units of length (metre),
mass (gram), liquid volume (litre) and
    temperature (degree Celsius).

3
Prefixes
  • Larger and smaller multiples of that unit are
    made by adding SI prefixes.
  • Prefix is a word or letter written in front of a
basic metric unit to specify the fraction or
    multiple of the unit.
  • The following table shows some examples of these
    units

4
Converting between Metric units

  • If converting from a larger unit (eg m) to a
    smaller unit
  • (eg cm), check what number of smaller units are
    needed to
  • make 1 larger unit, then multiply that number
    with the
  • relevant number of the larger units.
  • If converting from a smaller unit (eg cm) to a
    larger unit
  • (eg m), check what number of smaller units are
    needed to
  • make 1 larger unit, then divide that number into
    the
  • relevant number of the larger units.

Non-Metric Units of Length, Mass and Capacity
  • There are some countries that use non-metric
units (imperial units) more than metric-units.
Some common imperial units are given below

6
Currency
  • Currency is the money used in a country.
Exchange rates for the Omani Rial on 9-2-2009 are
    given below

Conversion Degrees Fahrenheit to or from Degrees
Celsius
  • Temperature is the measurement of how hot or cold
something is. It plays an important role in
almost all fields of science. It is measured in
    degrees Celsius (ºC).
  • In the U.S., it is common to report temperature
    in degrees Fahrenheit (ºF).
  • There are other ways to measure temperature but
we consider here the two Celsius and
    Fahrenheit.
