Title: Definition

1
Definition
  • A podcast is a media file that is distributed by
subscription over the Internet using syndication
feeds, for playback on mobile devices and PCs
  • A podcast is distinguished from other digital
audio / video formats by its ability to be
    downloaded automatically, using software capable
of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom.

2
Terminology
  • Audioblogging / Podcasting / Vodcasting /
    vlogcasting
  • Podcasting (or more recently) webcasting seems to
    be universal

3
Beginnings
  • Adam Curry and David Winer are often cited as
    being the podcast pioneers.
  • Podcasting's initial appeal was to allow
individuals to distribute their own "radio
shows," hence the first podcast is said to have
been The Grateful Dead on January 11th 2001.
  • Vodcasting 31st October 2003 with Dead End days,
    a zom-com serial
  • These systems quickly became used in a wide
variety of other ways, including language
    teaching.

4
The revolution
  • Divorcing time from place
  • Divorcing media from traditional player

5
Growth
  • Google hits
  • 28th September 2004 24
  • 1st August 2004 2,750
  • Last night 104,000,000

6
Why us?
  • Audio and video materials (listening)
  • Divorcing learning from time and place
  • A way of surviving the Internet killing the
noise and listening to the sounds
  • Future proofing (see 9)

7
More listening material
  • We need to think about how we use podcasts.
  • In the classroom there is scope for quality
    control
  • What happens outside the classroom?

8
A sign to the wise
9
Mobile technology
  • Convergence - the dreaded C word
  • (Ben Verwaayen BT Chief Executive)
  • The mobile phone market is larger than the
computer market so represents a bigger
opportunity for Internet companies and content
    providers.
  • (Marco Boerries Senior Vice President Connected
    Life Yahoo)

10
Future proofing
  • The iphone Samsung Ultra Smart F700

11
Continuous Partial Attention
  • - the behaviour of continuously monitoring as
many inputs as possible, paying partial attention
    to each Linda Stone

12
1945-65
  • Parents, authority figures, work and institutions
grounded our lives. This was where we invested
    our attention and time.
  • The stability revolution

13
1965-1985
  • Me and self-expression. We paid attention to that
    which created personal opportunities
  • The revolution in the head

14
1985-2005
  • The network is the centre of our world.
Continuous partial attention isn't motivated by
productivity, it's motivated by being connected.
  • Linda Stone
  • The networking revolution

15
Whats next?
  • ... committed full-attention focus. In this new
area, experiencing this engaged attention is to
feel alive. Trusted filters, trusted protectors,
trusted concierge, human or technical, removing
    distractions and managing boundaries, filtering
    signal from noise, enabling meaningful
connections, that make us feel secure, are the
    opportunity for the next generation.
  • Linda Stone
  • The revolution will be televised but youll be
watching it on your mobile revolution

16
Less means more
  • There is too much out there.
  • We need to filter and block
  • Ipods and Sky are just the beginning
