• Career Switcher takes people with affirmative,
  motivating reasons for entering the teaching
  profession, but arent sure how to do it, she
  says. Its the best way I can imagine to
  encourage more people in mid-life who desire
  change to open a new door and contribute in a
  different way. We need so many teachersall kinds
  of teachers. Career switchers have a lot to bring
  to the classroom after a wealth of experience
  from being out in the world.

Masons Career Switcher (CS)Program Sequence

• Begins twice a year Fall or Spring Matriculation
• Level I Fall/Spring OR Spring/Summer
• Issuance of state Eligibility License
• Job Search for a Teaching Position
• Level II First Year of Teaching with GMU Mentor
  and School Mentor
• Recommendation for Full Teaching License

What do I need for CS Admissions?

• Admissions
• Bachelors degree
• All content-area requirements complete
• Passing scores on Praxis I, Praxis II, and VCLA
• (Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment)
• 60 months of documented work experience
• Regular GMU application

CS Level I Preparation

• Twelve (12) credits, including 60 hours of field
  experience (15 hours/course)
• Fall /Spring (6 credits) OR Spring/Summer (6
  credits)
• Evening Courses at 430 pm and 720 pm
• Seek teaching position for Level II
• Continue working while completing course work

CS Level II Teaching

• Six (6) credits of internship (including monthly
  seminars)
• Full year of teaching, with support from retired
  teachers as mentors
• At the end of a successful year of teaching, the
  Eligibility License is upgraded to a regular and
  full teachers license.

Optional Masters of Education Degree

• 15 credits additional credits
• School divisions offer course reimbursement
• Get a pay increase with your master's degree
