English speaking and listening

• Impacts on all other areas of the curriculum.
• An essential building block in the development of
  reading and writing skills
• Children need to
• Listen carefully responding appropriately
• Retell stories, rhymes and poems
• Extend their vocabulary and being able to use new
  words in conversation
• Speak appropriately in different situations e.g.
  whole class, group, with friends

English - reading

• Children need to
• Read and be read to regularly ideally everyday
• Be able to attempt unfamiliar words by using the
  pictures, phonics, grammar and meaning of the
  sentence
• Read with increasing fluency and expression
• Be able to understand what is being read and
  demonstrate this through discussion including
  expressing their own opinions
• Read a wide range of material e.g. fiction and
  non-fiction, signs, packaging, magazines

English - writing

• Children need to
• Write for different purposes e.g. lists,
  instructions
• Write stories with a beginning, middle and end
• Write sentences with capital letters, full stops
  and other appropriate punctuation
• Spell high frequency words correctly
• Attempt to spell unknown words using phonic
  knowledge and spelling patterns
• Form letters correctly

Mathematics mental maths

• Numeracy passport targets will be sent home to
  practise
• Children need to
• Have quick recall of number facts, doubles of
  numbers to 10 etc.
• Develop mental problem solving strategies e.g.
  add 9 by adding 10 and subtracting 1
• Reinforce concepts that have been previously
  taught

Maths using and applying

• Children need to
• Solve problems involving counting, adding,
  subtraction, doubling or halving in the context
  of numbers, measures or money e.g. pay and give
  change
• Describe simple patterns and relationships
  involving numbers or shapes
• Describe ways of solving puzzles and problems,
  explaining choices and decisions

Maths - number

• Children need to
• Recognise and understand the value of numbers to
  20 (then higher)
• Be able to say a number 1 more and 1 less than
  any given number and 10 more and 10 less for
  multiples of 10
• Understand addition and subtraction and use the
  associated vocabulary accurately
• Start to develop an understanding of
  multiplication and division
• Count in 2s, 5s and 10s

Maths shape and space

• Children need to
• Know the 2D and 3D shapes and their properties
• Be able to describe the position of objects and
  the direction and distance when moving them
• Identify objects that turn about a point
  (scissors) or a line (door)
• Identify whole, half and quarter turns

Maths - measuring

• Children need to
• Estimate, measure, weigh and compare objects
  using non-standard and standard units
• Order the days of the week and the months of the
  year
• Read the time to the hour and half hour

Maths handling data

• Children need to
• Record information in lists and tables
• Present information in pictures, block graphs or
  pictograms
• Sort objects in to groups according to given
  criteria

• Children can borrow them on a Thursday and return
  them on a Sunday the same as in Reception
