  • After missing a competitive edge in
    technological advancement, the greatest strength
the African people have is their natural and
cultural heritage in form of environment,
material culture, history and expression in
folklore, dance and art. The African people need
to re-discover themselves in their cultural
heritage, reclaim and integrate it in the
    mainstream development process

Statement of Past Achievement of Engabu Za Tooro
  • Founded in 1999, to date Engabu Za Tooro has
    made tremendous achievements-
  • Through initiating highly unique and innovative
programmes, Engabu Za Tooro has reclaimed the
value and vitality of cultural heritage among the
tribal communities of western Uganda and adopted
it into the mainstream development process.
  • Traditional folklore and dance which was hitherto
informal and ignored, is now streamlined,
developed and integrated as competitive part of
    commercial entertainment.
  • Traditional cultural service providers who were
hitherto informal unrecognized and their services
waving away, are now formalised, professionalized
and their services streamlined, documented and
    made commercially viable and competitive.
  • The rich cultural materials which were unattended
and disappearing are now collected and organized
in community museum, galleries and cultural shops
for education and tourism. Engabu Za Tooros
Koogere Community Museum was recognized as one of
the 12 model community museum initiatives in
Uganda in a UNESCO funded mapping exercise in
    February 2009.
  • Koogere Women Empowerment Programme which uses
traditional heroism to inspire women to excel in
entrepreneurship and leadership, has been used by
scholars as a model case study to demonstrate the
    relationship between culture and contemporary
development practice. The initiator of these
innovative programmes has been nominated for
Ashoka International Award for social innovators.

5
  • From unattached and unemployed young people,
Engabu Za Tooro has groomed national and
international stars using skills and talent
development in a cultural context. National and
International Awards that have been won include

Cultural Artists 2007, PAM Awards best Western
    Artist 2008, Rotary International Vocational
Awards for Talent Development and using music to
    influence community. Nominations have included
Kisima East Africa Awards and Kora Africa Music
    Awards.
  • Disadvantaged young people are mobilized and
developed into artists who get adopted by Multi
    National companies for performing art,
advertisement and working as radio presenters.
  • Culture in performing art has been packaged and
used as a catalyst of development interventions
to stimulate the population to act.
  • In 2008 Engabu Za Tooro cultural programmes were
documented by Cross Cultural Foundation of Uganda
in a country programmes funded by Common Wealth
