ESI Innovation Strategy - Context6th Wave of
Innovation, Ecological Sustainability

Earth Systems Institute Green New Deal
the world is poised for new and fundamental
breakthrough innovations in the environmental and
health care areas, in view of the current energy
reality and environmental challenges such as
global warming radical innovation often
involves considerable change in basic
technologies and methods, created by those
working outside existing paradigms

Systematic Innovation Lab What is it?
  • A hands-on learning-by-doing facility located in
the heart of the UCD campus in SC East
  • Containing all the processes, tools appropriate
staff for people to learn how to EXECUTE the core
    process of innovation
  • Not just to learn about innovation or to
understand innovation, but to DO innovation via
    collaboration between technical and business
    people (researchers, students industry partners)

In the last 8 years, Samsung has generated over
10 times the total number of patents from the
whole of Ireland Could it be because they have a
process? Imagine what could be achieved if
Ireland adopted the same process? Source

Demonstration Project Sustainable Bioresources -
Dr. Kevin McDonnell
  • In 2005, a UCD campus company called BioE
successfully won a contract to supply technical
support to a UK based investment company to build
the worlds first waste plastic to synthetic fuel
    plant.
  • This plant is located in Ireland and is
    undergoing final commissioning at present.
  • BioE, with support from UCD and UL is now
undertaking a series of trials to co-pyrolysis
plastics with agricultural and forestry biomasses
    to produce sustainable fuels.
