4Fig. 1. Comparison of Salmonella genome
sequences. Five Salmonella genomes were compared
with the SalmonellaTyphimurium sequence. The blue
bars represent regions that are gt90 identical at
the DNA level between each serovar and S.
Typhimurium. Selected features are annotated on
the S.Typhimurium genome rrn, seven ribosomal
RNA operons fels-1, fels-2, gifsy-1 and gifsy-2,
previously characterized phage phage, previously
uncharacterized prophage SPI-15, previously
identified Salmonella pathogenicity islands not
present in Escherichia coli tus, TerB-binding
sites delimiting the terminus of DNA replication
ori, origin of DNA replication. The following
loci are also identified put(proline
utilization) pur, (purine) trp(tryptophan)
fad(fatty acid oxidation) his (histidine)
srl(sorbitol utilization) ilv(isoleucine-valine)
and met(methionine). Coordinates are given in
base pairs (bp) and centisomes (Cs), and each
mark on the ruler corresponds to 1 of the genome
(i.e. 1 Cs). For the S.Typhi comparison, filled
bars represent sequence that is arranged in the
same orientation as S.Typhimurium, whereas open
bars represent sequence that is in the opposite
orientation. Hence, these bars graphically
represent the rearrangements that have occurred
between these two Salmonella serovars. Note that
the S.Typhimurium and S.Typhi sequences are
complete whereas the other sequences are partial
sequences. Abbreviations S. Tm Salmonella
Typhimurium S. Ty Salmonella Typhi S. Pa
Salmonella Paratyphi S. En Salmonella
