Mission
  • The federal government encourages state and
local universities and colleges to share the
responsibility of math and science education for
public elementary, middle and high school
students. The mission of the LSUHSC-NOPS Science
Partnership is to assist in a nationwide
implementation of math and science educational
    reform.

4
Math and Science Partnership
  • The purpose of the partnership is to assist in a
nationwide implementation of math and science
    educational reform.
  • The federal government encourages state and local
universities and colleges to share the
responsibility of math and science education for
public elementary, middle and high school
    students.

5
Why every Grad Student needs to be a part of this
community project
  • Giving back to the community
  • Fostering education in science
  • Representing the Graduate School
  • Making a difference!!!

6
Activities During the Year
  • First Quarter Establish a schedule for the new
    year Graduate student/Elementary school teacher
    meetings and workshops.
  • Second Quarter Graduate students begin working
with the teachers. School science fair.
  • Third Quarter Graduate students continue
working in the classrooms assist with
preparation for the science portion of the LEAP
    exam.
  • Fourth Quarter Graduate students organize the

Forces and Motion
10
Do they have the same speed?
Do they have the same velocity?
Jills Speed- 10 miles/hour
Jacks Speed- 10 miles/hour
11
Force
  • Forces change motion. Pushing and Pulling are
    kinds of forces.
  • Force causes acceleration.

12
Friction
  • Friction is a force that resists the motion of
objects when the objects are touching each other.
If Jack doesnt pedal, the bike will eventually
stop because of the friction between the wheels
    and ground.

Review
  • 1. Push and Pull are types of ________.
  • 2. When you are talking about both speed and
direction, you are talking about ___________.
  • 3. The distance an object travels divided by the
time it takes to travel is its________.
  • 4. _________ force pulls the Earth and Moon
    towards each other.
  • 5. The measurement of gravity acting on an object
    is the objects __________.

Post-Katrina
  • For the 2005-2006 school year, 107 out of 117 New
Orleans Public Schools were designated failing
schools and transferred to Recovery School
    District.
  • Banneker Elementary and John Dibert were LSUHSC
adopted schools beginning in the 2006-2007 school
    year.
  • We curently only have enough volunteers to staff
Banneker Elementary, but others schools need our
    help!

20
Success Stories
  • The 4th grade students Crocker Elementary were
awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies at the
    2003 District Science Fair.
  • More students have passed or scored at the
masters level on the Math Science section of
    the LEAP exam.
  • As a result of the academic improvement in all
areas of the LEAP exam and other assessment
tests, Crocker was removed from the list of
    schools in corrective action.

  • Representatives from the LSUHSC/NOPS Science
Partnership participated in a panel during the
SFN Science Education workshop to discuss
strategies for establishing successful Math and
    Science partnerships between local universities
and colleges and the public school system.
  • Society for Neuroscience National Meeting 2003
    Science Education Workshop
  • Our Partnership was the only one emphasizing
    GRADUATE STUDENT involvement!!!
  • An abstract about or program was chosen for an
oral presentation at the Eighth International
