Title: CAPACITY BUILDING FOR MPA MANAGEMENT: THE CASE OF THE UNEPCEP TRAINING OF TRAINERS PROGRAMME

CAPACITY BUILDING FOR MPA MANAGEMENT THE CASE OF
THE UNEP-CEP TRAINING OF TRAINERS PROGRAMME
2
  • Coral reefs are of critical importance to the
marine environment and to the economies of most
    countries of the Wider Caribbean
  • MPAs are one of the major action by countries to
assist with conservation of coral reefs
  • Most MPAs lacked adequate management and were not
    meeting their objectives
  • Issue of lack of capacity of MPA Managers was
highlighted at the International Workshop on
Framework for Future Training in Marine and
Coastal Protected Area Mgt in 1997

  • The original timetable for completion of local
    training was ambitious
  • Follow up is required by UNEP-CAR/RCU to ensure
    local training takes place
  • UNEP-CAR/RCU offered assistance and additional
    time to prepare proposals
  • Participants in the 3rd course were required to
finalize draft proposals before the end of the
    course

10
  • The initiative is replicable throughout the WCR
    and the world
  • Periodic review of the training manual is
    necessary
  • The TOT Programme should be expanded to include
other coastal zone practitioners and other MPA
Managers from other regions of the world
  • A comprehensive evaluation of the programme needs
to be done to document its impact on the Wider
    Caribbean Region
