Title: The Multi Sensory Studio should be a blank canvas, it is what you make it

1
The Multi Sensory Studio should be a blank
canvas, it is what you make it!
When you understand the tools you can do anything!
2
The types of room
3
There are snoezlen type rooms.
Which are very white!
4
And then there are rooms
Which are not so white!
5
Rooms 2
Which are more like a studio
6
Dont forget portable equipment!
7
A studio can be used for stimulation
Touch
Taste
Smell
  • Vision

Hearing
8
Stimulation
What is stimulation?
It could be described as practicing with the
senses.
'Stimulation' is for all abilities at any age.
Who needs it? We all need it! Which senses?
All of them!
9
Vision
  • Projectors

Bubble Tubes
Fibre Optics
10
The expensive equipment isn't always the best!
  • It should always be fun!

Don't forget torches, fluorescent things and all
those cheap items.
11
The skills we are looking for?
  • Awareness
  • (Does the student respond in any way to visual
    stimulus)?

Fixation (A more sustained and constant response
to a visual stimulus)
Tracking (The ability to follow moving objects,
both horizontal and vertical)
12
The skills we are looking for?
  • Convergence
  • (The ability to maintain focus on an object as it
    approaches or moves away)

Accommodation (Focus on objects at varying
distances)
Eye contact (Sustained periods of looking at
people and objects) Hand eye co-ordination To
look at an object and to reach with the
hand) Scanning (The ability to search for an
object)
13
Sound?
It is around us all the time but what is it? What
do you actually do with your ears?
Is about hearing and listening!
But to acquire these skills there is a lot to
learn!
To develop these skills you can use
14
Sound
  • Music Old-New, Fast-Slow,
  • High-Low frequency, Vibration.

Sound Effects Within themes or sound games.
Sound Beam, Sound Samplers, Instruments, toys
...anything!
15
Touch
  • What do you do with it?

Its not just about hands. Its soft, hard,
smooth, rough, lumpy etc.
You could use Tactile panels, toys, switches
vibration and everyday objects.
You could study Hand eye skills, frequency,
strength, tolerance, duration.

Stages of InteractionMcInnes and Treffry 1982
  • Resists - Close contact, develop communication.
  • Tolerates - Co-active interaction, Hand on hand.
  • Co-Operates - Co-operates passively hands on
    wrist
  • Enjoys - Enjoys the activity and interaction with
    the adult.
  • Responds - Student follows adult lead.
  • Leads - Student leads with minimal contact.
  • Imitates Student able to imitate the sequence
    of activity.
  • Initiates - Student initiates sequence
    independently.

17
Taste
  • Within themes, for experience or recall skills.
  • Bitter, sweet, salt, sour, related.

18
Smell
  • Aromatherapy, man made smells, the real thing.
  • For recall skills, communication and experience.

The room can also be used for
  • Relaxation

Know what the student likes and dislikes.
Giving students the opportunity to make their own
choices in a session is important. A student may
show preferences to a particular item in the room
or scenario
The room may give us a reason and opportunity to
communicate, as an effect may be enjoyed or
disliked. There are many aspects of
communication, which can be developed in the MSR
including sequencing, turn taking, object
referencing, sign language voice. If a person
is not using the spoken word then we have to give
a student a means of communication i.e. use of
symbols or signs.
Choice
This is a multi sensory studio, so we can carry
out assessment of all the senses. We have a
controlled environment and varied equipment to
use. We may not be assessment experts, but we can
gain some knowledge about a persons sensory,
communication abilities and motor skills.
Whatever age you are working with from childrens
curriculum links to adults social skills, themes
can make room much more meaningful. It can be
transformed into a magical place full of variety
and fun.

We must have aims and objectives for the student
The session needs to have some purpose and
meaning, otherwise we will all lose interest. It
may be a relaxation session or learning and
developmental session but the student must know
what is going on and what is expected.
Meaningless
A student must be told what is happening, whom
you are with, where you are going and what is
going to happen when you get there?
  • Confusing

If we do not communicate what is happening in the
MSR then it could be a very stressful and
frightening place. If the student doesnt
understand the room, and the equipment within,
then this could contribute to their anxiety.
Dont turn all the equipment on at once. For some
students this will be bombarding (for some staff
it will be bombarding!) You may be better
selecting the tool you feel is best suited to the
students needs and then just using that.
