Bits, bytes and storage and Packets
  • How is information stored?

2
Bit
  • A bit (binary digit) an electrical
charge-similar to a light. It is either on or
    off.
  • When writing this on paper 1 mean 'on' and 0

  • A byte is a group 8 bits.
  • Kilobyte (KB) 210 (1,000) bytes
  • Megabyte (MB) 220 ( a million) bytes

Bytes and Text
  • A byte can represent one character in a text
    file.
  • One light has two possible signals on or off
  • Two lights have four

Doubling of signals
  • Each additional light will double the amount of
possible signals. Suppose we know the four

the third light on and repeat with the third
    light off.
