Objectives

• To teach students the similarities and
  differences between racquet sports to provide a
  foundation for participating in many forms of
  racquet sports for a lifetime.

• By applying a language arts tool, (Compare and
  Contrast), to the physical education setting we
  are making cognitive connections for students
• Connecticut LA Standard for 5th and 6th grade
• compare and contrast the ways similar themes are
  expressed in diverse works.

Compare and Contrast Task

• Compare and Contrast two types of Racquets The
  Tennis and Racquetball Racquets (Badminton).
• Provide two things that are unique to each
  racquet and two things that are same about the
  two different racquets.
• Explain why you think these differences and
  similarities may exist.

Teacher Notes

• Have students form small groups of 4 or 5 in a
  group, Give each group a blank Compare and
  contrast sheet.
• Provide both racquets to each group.
• Provide time for discussion, but limit it to on
  task discussions.
• Bring the class together and make a larger
  version of the Compare and Contrast Sheet for
  display or use an overhead, (computer with
  overhead or whiteboard would work well here.

Extensions

• Provide skills drills in a stations type
  environment for many forms of racquet sports and
  have them compare and contrast the skills needed
  to place various games.
• Place responses for all classes and groups on a
  single PowerPoint presentation and show other
  groups parents, teachers, administrators,
  schools.
• Have students match balls and racquets together
  based on comparisons, rules, and court
  dimensions.
• Allow students to choose the type of racquet
  sport they most want to participate. Then allow
  them to active practice time during instant
  activity in the next few classes. Students should
  track their personal skill development with a
  pre-assessment, and evaluate using a post
  assessment self/peer/teacher mechanism.
