Focus
  • Did you know that our school has one of the top
won/lost records in the state in all sports?
  • How would you decide if this statement is true?

3
Distinguish Fact from Opinion What is Evidence?
  • Historians try to back up their viewpoints about
the past. Sometimes they simply state factual
information or examples. When no source is given
for this factual information or these examples,
you dont know who said it or where it came from.
  • When historians give the source for their
    information, those historians are presenting
evidence. There are three types of evidence
  • Statement by witnesses or other people with a
    reason to know
  • Written documents
  • Objects
  • To decide if an argument is supported by
evidence, ask yourself Is there a statement by
someone other than the author of the argument, a
written document, or an object? If not, then
there is no evidence in the argument.
  • Label each of the following as (E) support of
evidence, (I) Information without evidence, (N)
    neither evidence nor information
  • Marie is the best volleyball player on our team.
  • Coach Jones says that Bob is the best player on
    the tennis team.
  • The scorebook shows that Fred, with an average of
.490, is the best hitter in the league.
  • The French were late in establishing colonies in
the New World because they did not give their
explorers, and Cartier, enough support after
    their first voyages.
  • John Cabot was popular in England after he
returned from the New World. According to a
London newspaper of the time, Londoners paid him
vast honor and ran after him like mad people.
  • One of the first French settlements in the New
World was near Quebec. The remains of the
settlement have been dated to the 1640s.
