Title: Bachelor of Science

Bachelor of Science Enrolment 2007
2
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (434201, LBSC)
  • 3 years full time (8 courses per year)
  • 24 courses (4.5 units each)
  • 3 courses per half year is a 75 load. This is
considered by Centrelink to be fulltime. This is
the minimum load for FPOS students.

First year enrolment
  • Choose your 3 areas of study.
  • You dont necessarily have to decide yet which
    will be your major.
  • Enrol in the level 1 courses in your 3 areas,
plus a Communication course and a Statistics
    course.
  • Part time students have more flexibility.
  • Variations are possible.

5
Majors and Minors
  • The list of permissible Majors and Science Minors
is at the LBSC web site.
  • The second minor can be any of those offered by
    the University, plus others.
  • Some combinations of major and minors are
    difficult to timetable.

6
Electives
  • 2 electives must extend the Major and/or the
Science Minor. (Both in the same area or one of
    each.)
  • 2 electives can be in any area of Science (the
    definition has fuzzy edges).
  • 2 electives must broaden the students learning.
That is, they must be not science.
  • If the second minor is not science, then the
Broadening requirement is fulfilled, and the last
    2 electives can be anything.

Double Degree
  • Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education
  • 4 years full-time
  • By substituting 6 core Education courses for the
second minor and BUGE courses in LBSC, you can
complete all requirements of both degrees in one
    extra year.

9
Double Degree
  • Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education has a
  • Science Major and a
  • Science Minor, plus
  • 4 or 5 Science electives, 2 of which must be
    extensions to the major/minor.
  • The choice of Science Majors and Minors is the
    same as for LBSC.

10
There are a few tricks
  • Some courses are listed in more than one major or
minor. For example, Biological Science 100 and
101 are in Biology, Nutrition and Applied
    Microbiology.
  • Of course you cant count the same course twice,
but you can choose to put such courses in
whichever area suits you. This gives more
    flexibility.

11
Chemistry
  • Chemistry 100 and Chemistry 101 assume knowledge
of SACE Stage 2 (year 12) Chemistry.
  • Chemistry in Life 100 and 101 do not. They can
be used to prepare for Chem 100/101.
  • Chemistry in Life 100/101 are adequate for
studies in Nutrition and Microbiology, and are
    included in those majors/minors.
  • Chemistry in Life 100/101 are essential for a
Biology major. Chem 100/101 is better.

12
Nutrition
  • Biological Science 100 and Human Physiology 1 are
exclusive alternatives. They cannot both be
    counted in LBSC.
  • Similarly, Biological Science 101 and Human
Physiology 2 cannot both be counted.
  • For most purposes, the Biology courses are
probably better. The exception is if the degree
    includes a Human Movement minor.

13
Physics
  • It is highly recommended that an Applied Physics
major be supported by a Mathematics minor.

14
Psychology Minor
  • Psychology may be used as the Science minor.
This is particularly relevant to LBES students.
  • Nevertheless, a minor in Psychology will fulfil
    the BUGE requirements of LBSC.
