Expanded work opportunities
  • Work hours up from 15 to 20 a week
  • Students in full time course of at least two
    years OR in a course resulting in points under
    SMC (currently eligible)
  • Year 12/13 school students in full time study
    with parental school permission
  • Tertiary students in full-time study of at least
    six months where primary purpose is to develop
    English language skills with IELTS overall band
    score of 5.0 or above at time of application for
    student visa or permit

    full time over summer holidays (except school
    students not yet in Years 12 or 13)
  • Partners of students studying for qualifications
    in areas of absolute skill shortage partners of

    (job offer required - eligibility clarified to
    include students graduating from PTEs as well as
    university polytechs)
  • New six month open work permit (no job offer
    required) for students graduating from a course
    eligible to get points under SMC

    incidence countries intending to stay in NZ for
    more than 6 months

  • Any person intending to stay in NZ for 12 months
    or more
  • undergo a full medical examination.
