Recent Changes to Student Immigration Policy.

Expanded work opportunities

• Work hours up from 15 to 20 a week
• Students in full time course of at least two
  years OR in a course resulting in points under
  SMC (currently eligible)
• Year 12/13 school students in full time study
  with parental school permission
• Tertiary students in full-time study of at least
  six months where primary purpose is to develop
  English language skills with IELTS overall band
  score of 5.0 or above at time of application for
  student visa or permit

• Students in courses of 12 months or more may work
  full time over summer holidays (except school
  students not yet in Years 12 or 13)
• Partners of students studying for qualifications
  in areas of absolute skill shortage partners of
  postgraduate students eligible for an open work
  permit

Easier path from study to work to residence

• Existing post-study two year work permit remains
  (job offer required - eligibility clarified to
  include students graduating from PTEs as well as
  university polytechs)
• New six month open work permit (no job offer
  required) for students graduating from a course
  eligible to get points under SMC

• Restrictions on part time work
• Restrictions on grant of further permits for a
  period of two years following completion of
  studies
• Provision for accompanying partners of NZAID
  students to apply for a work permit

Health Screening

• Presently
• Any person intending stay in NZ for more than 24
  months
• complete medical and x-ray certificate
• police certificate if over 17 years
• Any person aged aged 11 and over from high
  incidence countries intending to stay in NZ for
  more than 6 months
• undergo TB screening
• In future
• Any person intending to stay in NZ for 12 months
  or more
• undergo a full medical examination.
