2
About OCUL
  • OCUL is a consortium of twenty university
libraries in the province of Ontario. The member
    libraries cooperate to enhance information
    services through resource sharing, collective
purchasing, document delivery and many other
    similar activities
  • FTE/Service Population Served 315,639

3
About Scholars Portal
  • The Scholarsportal.info Project is a cooperative
venture, partly funded by the Ontario Innovation
    Infrastructure and Ontario Universities, to
    expand access to scholarly resources.
  • Scholarsportal.info is comprised of a number of
different components that are in the process of
    becoming integrated through SFX

4
OSP Specs
  • Hardware
  • Sunfire 6800 Server configured into four domains
each with 8-12 CPUs and 16-32 GB of memory
  • IBM Network Storage Server with capacity for 50
TB of data and high capacity robotic tape backup
    server
  • Software
  • ScienceServer (SS) / ENCompass for Journals
    OnSite (EJOS)
  • SFX v 3.0
  • CSA Illumina and RefWorks

5
E-Journals Component

future.Allowed print cancellations.
7
Next step loading indexes
  • CSAs Illumina is the interface to allow
federated searching of the online journal content
    hosted on OSP
  • It will be a platform for searching locally
loaded CSA indexes non-CSA indexes (Web of
Science, INSPEC, PsycCRITIQUES, and many more to
    come)
  • The Illumina user will never see the SS/EJOS
interface and users browsing or accessing
journals from A to Z lists or library catalogues
will never see the Illumina interface linking
    is provided through SFX
  • Goal is single search access to 100M articles

8
  • Rapid Access to Collections By Electronic
    Requesting
  • End-user request management of ILL
  • Side-result a Z39.50 union catalogue
  • Utilizes Fretwell-Downing Informatics - VDX
    2.7.0.1 Release (Build 99)
  • Not integrated into SFX but hopefully soon!

True Synergy Between RefWorks and SFX
  • Users can create a dynamic to read list of
articles and books from the library
  • Researchers can now bookmark research - most
of our OPACs and indexes are databases with user
    sessions that expire
  • Faculty can share these bookmarks with students
and as such create bibliographies or a course
reading list without having to understand what
    an EZ proxy prefix is

14
Other OSP Projects on the go
  • O-Zone
  • Runs on D-SPACE Institutional Repository Software
    from MIT
  • Open Archive Initiative compliant
  • Investigating the archiving of municipal and
    provincial documents
  • CORIL
  • Cooperative Online Repository for Information
    Literacy
  • repository of instruction materials assessment
    tools

15
Benefits weve experienced
  • Full time staff dedicated to the set up and
maintenance of OSP projects including SFX
  • Costs savings through consortial purchase
  • Local loading allows local customization
  • Users who move within the province have familiar
    tools at their fingertips
  • Shared interfaces means institutions can share
    product FAQs and instructional tools

16
Making Links b/w Libraries
  • The Making Links blog was created in September
2004 to share information and to support
librarians within the OCUL consortium who are
adapting their library services to the
    technologies new to OCUL
  • While listservs support implementers, the blog
was to support public service librarians
  • http//makinglinks.uwindsor.ca/
  • I moderate the blog. Thats why Im here. But.
