  • During feudal times Samurai used KaMons (or Mons)
    to identify themselves in battle part of
    identifying family heritage
  • Only Imperial family, Daimyo, and Samurai could
    use mons
  • Passed down in families, given as an award for
    meritorious service
  • During Edo Period mons spread to many people as
    an identity of families especially merchants
    and artisans still hung in shops today
