Number of Students Who Failed the GED by Subtest
Area (math, writing, reading, social studies,
science)
  • 656 adult learners in Massachusetts failed the
    GED test
  • Math is the area where most adult learners failed
    (474 individuals)

Assessment Innovate and Evaluate
  • Goal To increase the GED passing rate statewide
    by 10 by June 30, 2009.

Strategy
  • Provide training and professional development
    focusing on teaching math to GED students.
  • Develop strategies for low performing programs to
    address their low GED attainment in their
    Continuous Improvement Plans (CIP).
  • Recognize programs that improved their GED
    attainment rate by 10 at the annual Directors
    Meeting, Fall 2009.

Implementation Stage
  • Discuss the GED attainment data at the Directors
    Conference in September 2008 look at possible
    strategies that programs could use to increase
    their students pass rates in math.
  • Identify programs with low GED attainment rate
    and provide targeted technical assistance in this
    area.
  • Require programs with low performance to include
    this goal in their CIPs.
  • Provide professional development trainings that
    focus on teaching math to GED students.

Evaluation Process
  • Review the GED attainment (especially Pass / Fail
    rate in math) after 6 months and at the end of
    the year.
