What is mountain green?
  • The focus of Mountain Green is to empower
    regional businesses to become more sustainable.
    Each program component features experts in
    architecture, development, energy, and
    construction who discuss best practices and
    applicable green technologies. Mountain Green
    consists of the following
  • Annual conference to promote sustainable
    community practices for our mountain region
  • Seminar series that may lead to a Sustainable
    Community Certificate of Participation
  • Training for a Home Energy Rating System
    Certificate
  • Training for a Building Performance Institute
    Certificate and
  • INSULATE!, a direct action program to assist
    families in poverty with weatherizing their homes.

  • Joe will present case studies reflective of
    community approaches to sustainable development.
  • The case studies will be derived from his work
    through the Asheville Design Center and the
    Public Projects, Inc. which continues to play an
    integral part in renovating and revitalizing the
    heart of Asheville, NC.

  • Heather Alley, CPA, Dixon Hughes, PLLC
  • Heather Alley, CPA is a Senior Tax Manager with
    Dixon Hughes, PLLC in their Asheville office.
    Before joining Dixon Hughes in 2006, Heather
    spent six years as the corporate and partnership
    tax manager of a Western Carolina public
    accounting firm with a focus in real estate,
    construction, manufacturing and distribution.
    Prior to entering public accounting Heather
    worked for several years as a controller in the
    construction industry.

  • Clarke Snell, Think Green, LLC Clarke Snell is
    the author of two books on alternatives to
    conventional construction, "The Good House Book"
    and "Building Green". He has taught green
    building as an adjunct professor at the
    University of North Carolina, Asheville and is a
    frequent lecturer at conferences and public
    events. Clarke administers Think Green Building,
    LLC, a consulting and design network dedicated to
    finding workable solutions to creating healthy,
    beautiful built environments that deal
    responsibly with our present environmental and
    social challenges.

  • Kathy Mattea, Singer/Songwriter
  • Grammy Award-winning singer Kathy Mattea presents
    My Coal Journey, a one-hour program
    incorporating stories from her family history and
    her current advocacy for the environment,
    combined with a Powerpoint slideshow and a
    performance of songs from her 2008 release,
    COAL. The presentation traces Kathys
    motivation for beginning the recording project,
    her research into the musical genres history and
    elemental style, and her familys ties to coal
    mining culture in Appalachia, along with
    discussion of environmental and social justice
    issues surrounding coal mining methods in todays
    world.

  • Land Use and Its Impacts on Biodiversity
  • John Gerwin, North Carolina Museum of Natural
    Sciences
  • John will present information regarding the
    changes in land use and its impacts on
    biodiversity. His research includes pre bird
    banding and ecotourism efforts in the community
    from which North Carolina based coffee company,
    Counter Culture Coffee, purchases coffee. This
    is the same community that Warren Wilson
    Colleges 2010 international studies social work
    course to Nicaragua will study and serve (Finca
    de Esperanza Verde). John will also present
    information pertaining to his research
    neotropical bird communities that migrate from
    Guatemala to North and South Carolina.

  • MARCH 4, 2010 - Small Business Sustainability
  • Kim Elena Bullock, Counter Culture is the
    Sustainability and Producer Relations Manager for
    Counter Culture Coffee, a specialty coffee
    roasting company based in Durham, North Carolina.
    Kim will present information on the
    sustainability program of Counter Culture Coffee
    - a North Carolina small business. A part of her
    presentation will feature a community in
    Nicaragua, Finca de Esperanza Verde, where bird
    research is being conducted by John Gerwin of the
    NC Museum of Natural Science. This Nicaraguan
    community is also the destination for a WWC 2010
    International Social Work Course.

  • Maggie Ullman, City of Asheville Office of
    Sustainability
  • Maggie Ullman serves as the Energy Coordinator in
    the City of Asheville Office of Sustainability.
    Responsible for developing and implementing city
    sustainability programs, she provides technical
    expertise to achieve the City's carbon footprint
    reduction goal, while acting as the point person
    for internal and external communications
    regarding sustainability.

  • Chris Mathis, President, MC2
  • R. Christopher Mathis is president of Mathis
    Consulting Company (MC2), which provides a
    variety of strategic services to both private and
    public sector interests related to buildings and
    building product performanceThese efforts address
    product and building performance issues for new
    construction as well as for renovation, energy
    use and peak demand issues for utilities,
    meaningful sustainability metrics, as well as
    local, state and national regulatory planning.
    Chris and his team conduct frequent training
    seminars from improved building energy efficiency
    and comfort to energy and power planning to
    improved building and energy codes to the
    challenges of sustainability and green building.
