Citing Sources
  • MLA formatting references sources within the body
of the paper rather than in footnotes or
endnotes. Any source referenced in your paper
must be included in your Works Cited page.
  • When should you reference a source?
  • The ideas are not your own
  • You are directly quoting from the source
  • You are using a statistic, story, or fact that is
    not common knowledge
  • Where should you include the reference?
  • Where a pause would naturally occur to avoid
disrupting the flow of your writing (usually at
    the end of a sentence).

3
Citing Format
  • If the author is identified in the text, add only
the page number in the parenthetical reference
  • In No Need for Hunger, Robert Spitzer recommends
that the U.S. government develop a new foreign
    policy for world hunger (10).
  • If author is not method in the text, add the last
name of the author and the page number (no
    commas)
  • No Need for Hunger recommends(Spitzer 10).

4
Citing Formatting
  • You do not know the author
  • Use the title of the article, journal, etc. and
    the page number
  • You can shorten the name if it is very long
  • NEVER include a web site in a parenthetical
    reference!
  • You are paraphrasing the ideas from an author,
    not using a specific quote
  • Add your reference at the end of the section
