This presentation is partial satisfaction of ED
251, Education For a Democratic, Pluralistic
Society. This is an advanced study of the
economic, social, historical, philosophical
issues related to the schools, students, and the
society.
4
In the course, we address the implications of
theories and research concerning the history of
education and schools, the nature of learning,
values, democratic education, pluralism, equal
opportunity, and barriers to the above. The
course will examine the current status of
California public schools, and the relationship
between these schools and the students,
especially with regards to technology.
5
This Report Will Show the Growth Achieved by

Why SCOE Exists The mission of the Sacramento

this in five ways Sacramento County Office of

Student Population
Students served in Court /Community Schools are
incarcerated youth, expulsions from districts or
referrals from probation officers. Traditionally
these youth are behind in academic skills, and
deficient in credits.
8
  • Many of our students come to us having missed
several months to years of schooling.
  • Homeless
  • Truancy
  • Incarceration
  • Vagrancy

9
Enrollment in Court/Community Schools can be from
days to one year.
Sporadic attendance continues to be a problem in
one Court School and in most Community Schools.

Equity Issues
  • Students are often grouped by age, not by ability
    or grade level.
  • Access to technology continues to be an issue,
although significant progress is being made.
  • This population of students often feels
disenfranchised and therefore puts in little
    effort.

Whats being done?
Digital H.S. has equipped each classroom with new
computers. Court Schools are working with student
friendly software programs for reading and math.
Results look promising. Court and Community
