What started the Protestant Reformation?
  • The Protestant Reformation was the switch from
    Catholic to Protestant religion.
  • Desiderius Erasmus was the one who sparked the
reformation. He wrote Praise of Folly which
criticized the church and their need for reform.
  • Martin Luther also disagreed with the Catholic
teachings. It is said that Erasmus laid the egg
    that Luther hatched. (Glencoe, 413)

3
Martin Luther
  • In an effort to absolve this, he wrote his
95-Theses. This was an attack on the Catholic
Church because it questioned the sell of
    indulgences.
  • Luther believed that people gained their
salvation through faith and not good works or
through the sell of indulgences (pieces of paper
    to clear their sins.)

4
The Catholic Church
  • At this time the leaders of the church were only
concerned with politics and money. They were not
at all concerned with the religious aspects of
    their job.
  • The church leaders automatically got a free
pass to salvation because of their job and good
    works.

5
The Sale of Indulgences
  • These indulgences were sold by Johann Tetzel with
the saying As soon as the coffer money box
rings, the soul from purgatory springs. (Galens)
  • The common people were told that if they bought
an indulgence they could reduce loved ones time
    in purgatory by 1,143 yrs.

6
Social System
  • The social system stayed the same.
  • This is because the rich were usually the ones
who could buy their salvation and go to heaven.
  • The poor people were still poor because they
couldnt buy the indulgences and were said to go
    into purgatory.
  • So the Reformation didnt do any thing to change
    the social status.
