Title: Component Reliability Data from 1982 to 1997 on 49 Japanese LWRs Accumulated in the Nuclear Componen

1
Component Reliability Data from 1982 to 1997 on
49 Japanese LWRs Accumulated in the Nuclear
Component Reliability Data System
  • Yukihiro KIRIMOTO
  • Akira SASAKI
  • Nuclear Information Center
  • (NIC)
  • Central Research Institute of Electric Power
    Industry
  • (CRIEPI)

2
Background
  • Failure rate data for PSA on nuclear power LWRs
  • Most data of component failure rates in Japanese
PSAs were acquired from U.S. databases.
  • The Nuclear Information Center (NIC) started a
research study on estimating the major component
failure rates at the request of the utilities in
    1988.

3
Background (2)
  • Japanese Components Failure Rate
  • 1996. CRIEPI Report P95001(Japanese) (10Years
    34LWRs)
  • 1997. NSRA Report (Japanese) (10Years 34LWRs
    based on CRIEPI data)
  • (Akizuki T., Kirimoto Y.,1998,Development of
NPPs Component Reliability Database for PSA in
Japan,Pressure Vessel and Piping Codes and
Standards, San Diego, CA, U.S., PVP-Vol.360
    17--21)

4
Objectives
  • Collect the operation data at domestic nuclear
    power plants
  • Event reports (include added 15LWRs)
  • Equipment data (added 15LWRs)(population ,
    specification)
  • Operation history (include added 15LWRs)
  • Evaluate these data to make a Japanese component
    failure rate database for PSA.

5
Nuclear Information Communication / Database
System NICS
  • DATA in NICS
  • Domestic event reports
  • INPO event reports
  • Domestic component data
  • Operation maintenance data (NUMASS)
  • Component reliability data(Reliability Data
    System)

6
Objectives of the Reliability Data System
  • Compute component failure rates for PSA
  • Synthesize the data relevant to failure rates
  • Configuration
  • Failure data
  • Component population
  • Operation time
  • Demand times
  • Engineering data

7
Data Collection and Evaluation flow
470,000 components
1,230 Event Report
49 Plants 16 Years
8
Component Boundary (Motor Driven Pump)
9
Computing failure rate
  • In cases of no failures by failure mode during
operation, a figure of 0.5 failures was assumed.
  • 90 confidence range by the chi-square
    distribution

10
Transition of Failure rates between 10years
34LWRs and 16Years 49LWRs
11
Comparison with major U.S. data(part)
12
Consideration of Database of Japan
  • Japanese revised component reliability data show
lower failure rates than previous one and other
    data in most part.
  • This difference (between U.S. data Japanese
data) in the maintenance and the period of
reports causes the difference in failurer rates
    of components.

13
Concluding Remarks
  • Data expansion
  • Extended period , April 1, 1992 to March 31, 1998
  • Researched component populations and demand data
    of added 15 LWRs
  • the revised failure rate was evaluated for 113
modes for 50 kinds of components on 49 Japanese
    LWRs in 16 years
  • The utilities are now evaluating the data of this
system for applying them to PSA.

14
Future Developments
  • The usual Failure rate data will continue to be
    accumulated
  • Examination will be started concerning
reliability data for digital instruments and ABWR
    components.
