Title: Learn about Aruba

1
Learn about Aruba
  • By Alexandra McNamara

Start
2
Aruba, One Happy Island
  • The island of Aruba is located in the heart of
the Southern Caribbean, 15 miles off the coast of
Venezuela. It is 6 miles across, at its widest
point, with an area of approximately 70 square
    miles.

3
Arubas Climate
  • Aruba has a dry climate and an arid,
cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped
tourism, as visitors to the island can expect
warm, sunny weather nearly everyday. Aruba lies
outside the hurricane belt and has moderate
rainfall, about 16 inches per year. Among the
most recognizable vegetation on the island is the
    Divi-Divi tree.

4
Arubas History
  • Aruba, which had been under the rule of several
European countries since around 1500, is today
part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but
functions independently. The Dutch influence on
Aruba remains strong. In fact, Arubas
international is named for the current Queen of
the Netherlands, Queen Beatrix. Dutch and
Papiamento are the two official languages.

5
Arubas Economy
  • At one time during the mid-20th century, oil
processing was the dominant industry in Aruba.
Today, that influence is minimal, as tourism is
the chief economic driver on the island.
    Additionally, Arubas agriculture and
    manufacturing industries remain minimal.
