RoEduNet - Oportunities
  • (new) technologies boost optical fiber usage
    WDM to be used
  • leasing existing dark fiber (or at least lambdas)
    from infrastructure owned by various companies
    electrical power distribution, railways, telecom
  • focus on Romanian Railway company
    telecommunications division CFR Telecomunicatii
    S.A.
  • efforts to find solutions for both sides benefit
    local loops in main cities
  • contacts made to start gathering information
    needed
  • support from involved ministries (education and
    research,transport, communcations)
  • funding for the start of project exists (aprox 3
    mil EUR)

Opportunities CFR fiber infrastructure
  • more than 4500 km optical fiber installed, will
    grow next to 8000 km
  • about 550 railway stations have fiber
    termination and connectivity facilities
  • CFR has a project to implement a DWDM network
    NW-SE extension
  • RoEduNet to provide local loops for all main
    cities and equipment needed to light the fiber
    for Galati Iasi Cluj

RoEduNet NG
  • proposed structure uses CWDM and DWDM
    technologies
  • aprox. 2500 km DWDM links between NOCs
  • proposal - Ethernet technology to be used
    (cheaper)
  • CWDM connecting POPs to NOCs
  • 9 main cities have no fiber connectivity using
    CFR infrastructure (for time beeing)

  • great achievement to have a modern network
    infrastructure
  • specialization in optical transmission modern
    technologies opportunity for people involved in
    the project
  • independence from market
  • providing a testbed for testing new technologies
  • future projects for high-speed interconnections
    to neighbor NRENs possible
