- Introduction Stem cells are important in
Tissue Engineering as they can be promoted into
different lineages by addition of growth factors
and variation of culture conditions. As they are
often found in small percentages in a mixed cell
population, their isolation and purification is
essential. This can be achieved using cell
sorting.

Conclusion It is possible to sort rare
populations of stem cells from peripheral blood
using high speed cell sorting. Stem cells appear
to hold the key to Tissue Engineering and
therefore their isolation into a single, pure
population is very important.
