What is a woodpecker?
  • A woodpecker is any of various usually brightly
    colored birds of the family Picidae, having
    strong claws and a stiff tail adapted for
    clinging to and climbing trees and chisellike
    bill for drilling through bark and wood.

  • The largest species of the woodpecker is the
    imperial woodpecker found in Mexico, is about 22
    inches long.
  • The smallest species of woodpecker is the kogera
    woodpecker found in Japan, is about 6 inches
    long.

  • Woodpeckers live on average from 4 to 11 years.
