Slips, Trips and Falls
  • Take 5 for Safety

2
Statistics
  • Statistics show that 60 percent of falls happen
as a result of slips and trips or falls from
same level. The remaining 40 percent are falls
from heights, such as falls from ladders, roofs,
stairs, or jumping from and elevation.
  • Statistics also show that slip, trip, and fall
accidents cost employers over 300 million dollars
    every year.

3
Percentages
4
  • How often do we perform a common task without
realizing we are creating a potential hazard?

5
  • Not Paying Attention Where will I land?

6
Falls from Elevation
  • Wheres my head?

7
Falls from Stairs
  • OOPS!

8
Can this be prevented?Yes, by properly training
new Employees, and using proper foot wear. This
is just one example
9
Some other examples of Slips and Trips are
  • Occasional spills
  • Weather hazards
  • Loose, wrinkled, or unattached rugs and mats
  • uncovered cables
  • Uneven walking surfaces
  • Obstructed view, clutter in your way
  • Poor lighting
  • Improper foot wear

10
What you can do to help prevent falling at work?
  • Remember that safety is everybodys business..
Employees can improve their own safety too.

11
How?
  • By taking your time and paying attention to where
    your are going,
  • Adjusting your stride to a pace that is suitable
for the walking surface and the tasks you are
    doing,
  • Use proper foot wear.
  • Walking with the feet pointed slightly outward,
    and
  • Making wide turns at corners.

12
  • Remove things you can trip over from stairs and
    places where you walk
  • Use non-slip tread on stairs
  • Put extension and electrical cords out of way
  • Wear shoes that give good support and have
    non-slip soles
  • Using a flashlight if you enter a dark room
    where there is no light
  • Practice ladder safety
  • And, be sure scaffolds are properly assembled

13
  • Now that we have looked some of the causes and
preventions of slip, trips, and falls lets end by
saying that Slips occur when there is too little
friction between a persons feet and the walking
surface, and trips occur when a persons foot
contacts an object and they are thrown off
balance. Falls are usually the result of slips
and trips. When we remember to use the prevention
skills mentioned in this article then we may
reduce tremendously, our chances of slips, trips,
    and falls.
