BACKGROUND
  • Mississippi is a state historically plagued by
    poor health outcomes, poverty and lack of access
    to healthcare.
  • Most Mississippians live in rural areas with
    critical shortages of professional nurses.
  • Employers recognized the value of critical
    thinking, leadership and communication skills
    developed at the Baccalaureate level and
    acknowledged the relationship between advanced
    education and improved patient care outcomes.

BACKGROUND
  • Registered nurses (RNs) in Mississippi will
    soon have more flexibility in earning a
    bachelors degree in nursing from the University
    of Southern Mississippi with the help of a 1.1
    million dollar grant from the Department of
    Health and Human Services Administrations
    Advanced Nursing Education Grant.

PURPOSE
  • To assist Mississippi RNs, prepared at the
    Associate or Diploma level to receive their BSN
    through an innovative online program.

Mission for the Online Program
  • Improving access to higher education for
    Mississippi Registered Nurses through excellence
    in online learning and the promotion of the best
    teaching practices in a flexible and dynamic
    learning environment.

Support for Online Transition
  • The School of Nursing has collaborated with
    healthcare employers in each of the three cities
    in which the School of Nursing has a campus
    (Hattiesburg, Long Beach, and Meridian), gaining
    support for the online program.
  • Support has been evidenced by tuition
    reimbursement, salary differentials for BSN
    graduates and significant financial support from
    area hospitals.

HRSA GRANT OJBECTIVES
  • Modify the existing weekend RN/BSN program to an
    ONLINE format.
  • Recruit, admit, and retain qualified students
    from minority and disadvantaged groups into the
    RN to BSN program.
  • Develop partnerships with rural clinical
    agencies.
  • Provide qualified faculty who are prepared to
    develop and teach online culturally sensitive
    curriculum.

Unique Program Features
  • To facilitate the family, work, and study needs
    of the Registered Nurses, all nursing courses
    will be offered online.
  • A student may begin the program in the Fall and
    Spring semesters.
  • A student may complete the program in three (3)
    consecutive semesters of full-time studies.

  • The Program is designed to provide FLEXIBILITY
    for nurses who live and work in rural areas as
    well as urban areas of the state.
  • The courses and objectives of this 36-credit hour
    curriculum were designed to meet requirements for
    accreditation by CCNE and reflect the objectives
    of the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education
    in Nursing.

  • Qualified nurses will serve as preceptors and
    supervisors for students, providing direct
    clinical instruction, supervision, guidance and
    evaluation relative to the clinical application
    of the course content taught.

    Advising.

Admission Requirements
  • Admissions to Southern Miss as an undergraduate
  • Graduation with an Associate degree in Nursing or
    diploma program accredited by NLN
  • GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale in non-nursing
    prerequisites
  • Proof of CPR and unrestricted RN license
  • Physical exam and vaccinations
  • T.B. skin test
