GOES Program Overview
  • GOES satisfies National Weather Service (NWS)
    requirements for 24 hour observation of weather
    and Earths environment to support storm-scale
    weather forecasting by forecasters and numerical
    models
  • To meet requirements, GOES continuously maintains
    operational satellites at two locations (75
    degrees West and 135 degrees West), with an
    on-orbit spare ready in case of failure

    small receivers antennas, and marginal receive
    systems

Program Direction
  • Current 5-year GOES satellites and instruments
    are based on late 1970s design and materials,
    many of which are no longer manufactured
  • Current GOES instruments do not satisfy validated
    1999 requirements for storm scale numerical
    models and finer time resolution for the
    modernized National Weather Service
  • Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Advanced
    Baseline Sounder (ABS) will satisfy NWS
    requirements
  • GOES will benefit by infusing state-of-the-art
    technology being developed by NASA, i.e., new
    geostationary imaging Fourier transform
    spectrometer (GIFTS)
  • 7 year lifetimes will avoid costs equivalent to
    two satellites over 15 years
