What are the goals of the SRTS Program?
  • Enable and encourage children, including those
    with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school
  • Make walking and bicycling to school a safer and
    more appealing lifestyle choice
  • Facilitate the planning, development, and
    implementation of projects that improve safety in
    the vicinity of schools

How much funding is available in this program?
  • Congress approved 612M for a nationwide SRTS
    Program
  • California will receive 68M over the five-year
    life of SAFETEA-LU (federal authorizing
    legislation)
  • 45M was made available in the first call for
    projects 23M in the second call.

Who is eligible to compete for SRTS funds?
  • Any state, city, county, or regional agency
  • Any school/school district
  • Any non-profit organization than can meet federal
    requirements
  • Native American Tribes

What type of projects are eligible for funding?
  • Infrastructure projects (capital improvements)
  • Non-infrastructure projects (education,
    encouragement, enforcement)

What is the targeted timeline for cycle 2?
  • 6/07 Feedback solicited on proposed
    improvements from cycle 1.
  • 8/07 Conducted statewide outreach.
  • 8/07 Updated the SRTS website.
  • 8/07 Announced a call for SRTS and SR2S
    projects.
  • 11/30/07 Deadline for applications.
  • 12/07 Project selection committees convene.
  • 1/08 Applicants will be notified of results.
