Further Maths
  • is an AS/A level qualification
  • is designed to be studied alongside standard the
    standard Maths AS/A levels
  • has content which is both broader and deeper than
    the standard Maths A level
  • carries UCAS points in exactly the same way as
    other AS/A levels

2
Why do Further Mathematics?
Studying Further Maths will
  • make you think! (and so develop your thinking
    skills)
  • give you the chance to meet some interesting and
very useful Mathematical ideas not covered on the
    standard Maths A level
  • help your understanding of the standard Maths A
level and possibly increase your standard Maths
    grade
  • help you to succeed on any Maths-related degree
    course

3
Any form of Engineering
If you have the chance, you would be foolish not
to do Further Mathematics if
  • you enjoy Mathematics and are keen to learn and
    understand more
  • you intend to do a degree in a maths-based
    subject like

Computing
Sciences (especially Physics)
Mathematics
4
What topics are studied?
  • The Pure Mathematics element of Further
Mathematics builds on the Pure Mathematics
studied in the standard Maths A level
  • New topics include

Complex Numbers
Matrices
Mathematical proof
5
What topics are studied?
  • Pure Maths topics developed further from the
    standard A level include

Functions
Algebra
Differential Equations
Calculus
6
What topics are studied?
  • In Applied Maths you can develop the applied
topics from your standard Maths A level to a
higher level, or broaden your knowledge into
    different topics
  • Applied Maths modules may be studied in

Statistics
Mechanics
Decision Discrete Maths
Numerical Analysis
7
How are the AS and A level qualifications made up?
  • You need 3 extra modules for an AS in Further
Maths, one of which must be Further Pure Maths 1
  • You need 6 extra modules for an A-level in
Further Maths, two of which must be Further Pure
Maths 1 and Further Pure Maths 2

8
How will studying through the Further Mathematics
Centre work?
  • A lot more of of your studying will be done
    independently
  • Your studies will be managed by a tutor
  • You will use resources on an extensive,
    purpose-written website
  • You will learn to make effective use of your
    textbook

9
How will I work with my Further Mathematics tutor?
  • Centres fill this in depending on their
    individual circumstances

10
What are the benefits of this style of studying?
This style of studying will
