Title: X-WiN A Network Infrastructure for Research Projects

1
X-WiNA Network Infrastructure for Research
Projects
  • Martin Wilhelm
  • DFN-Verein, Berlin

2
National Research Networks
  • Science and Research have specific requirements
    to networking
  • The general internet (Commodity Internet) in
many cases cannot cover these requirements
  • As a consequence, in nearly all countries
National Research Networks (NRENs) have been set
    up
  • To cover international requirements, a matching
    infrastructure is available

3
X-WiN Main Characteristics (1)
  • Based on Dark Fiber (long term lease)
  • Dual connected nodes with redundant fiber tracks
  • (Almost) all nodes located on customer premises
  • DWDM equipment dedicated to DFN, but owned,
operated and serviced by Huawei (service contract
    with SLAs)
  • Approx. 400 sites connected

4
X-WiN Main Characteristics (2)
  • Dark Fibers to neighbour NRENs (Cross Border
Fibers, CBF) PL, CH/IT, FR, NL
  • Fiber Structure complemented by a few Managed
Wavelength as shown on next slides
  • DWDM equipment BWS 1600
  • Carrier grade equipment
  • Up to 1,6 Tbps (160 10 Gbps wave-lengths per
    fibre)
  • Optical Protection feature

5
X-WiN Main Characteristics (3)
  • Multiple ring structure with redundant fibre
routing results in extremely high reliability
    ( 100 for IP Backbone)
  • 0 packet loss in IP backbone, achieved by
    right-sizing of backbone capacity
  • National point-to-point services can be provided
with optical protection -gt no loss of
connectivity in the event of fibre cuts
  • 24 7 hotline

Services provided DFNInternet
  • Main service DFNInternet
  • General platform for TCP/IP based applications
for worldwide access to National Research
Networks (via GEANT2) as well as to the public
internet (via private and public peerings and
    global IP transit)
  • IP platform is centrally managed by DFNNOC (24
    7 hotline)

Services provided P2P Links I
  • Many research projects only require connectivity
between a limited number of sites, but at high
    capacity
  • VPNs based on point-to-point wavelengths is the
method of choice for these requirements
  • Benefits
  • Attractive price
  • Full capacity available for project
  • Increased reliability possible by use of cross
    border fibres

Conclusion
  • For Research and Science in Germany, X-WiN
offers the quality, reliability and coverage
required by the most demanding projects
  • All medium to large research facilities in
Germany have been chosen to host a node of the
X-WiN backbone, thus facilitating the provision
of point-to-point links (no additional cost for
    local loops)
  • NRENs provide the infrastructure for research
