1. Evolution of E-Learning
  • E-learning technology has developed rapidly in
    the past decade.
  • CD-ROMs have been replaced by web-based
    applications, and rapid E-Learning solutions have
    empowered course developers.

  • For learners, E-learning offers an improvement
    over other instructional methods.
  • For content developers, rapid E-Learning makes it
    possible to develop E-Learning solutions in-house.

2. Pilot Proof of Concept
  • The overall goal of the pilot phase will be to
    establish the proof of concept for this education
    intervention, according to the following criteria
  • Effectiveness of the intervention (to increase
    knowledge problem-solving skills
  • adult learning
  • health promotion/health behaviour change
    perspective
  • Robustness of KT/content development process
  • integration of information from multiple sources
    (existing pt. education resources, literature,
    clinical expertise),
  • iterative prototyping
  • collaboration
  • extensive use of consumer involvement feedback
  • Strength of e-learning platform
  • overall identity (graphic look feel, logo, etc)
  • templates comprising basic elements (videos,
    step-by-step guides, testimonials, quizzes)

Project Overview
  • SCI-U is being developed in 3 phases
  • The prototype phase was concluded in late 2008,
    resulting in the completion of 3 beta modules and
    a preliminary evaluation
  • The pilot phase will take place during 2009,
    resulting in the completion of 6 initial modules
    and a formal evaluation
  • The production phase will last for 2 years and
    result in the completion of additional (12)
    modules.

Potential Modules
  • The 3 beta modules cover important topics related
    to body functioning.
  • Pilot modules will cover other priority issues
    (as identified in the Information Resource
    Centre Needs Assessment).
  • Ultimately, SCI-U will offer modules on a wide
    range of topics

E-Learning Production Process
  • Within each phase of the SCI-U project, the same
    3 basic steps are required
  • 1. Content Development Identification of
    learning objectives, storyboard script
    development
  • 2. Multimedia Production Video shoot
    postproduction, graphic design
  • 3. Evaluation
  • By subject-matter experts end-users

Content Development
  • 1. Setup Each module will begin with a set of
    learning objectives, which will anchor content
    development and evaluation
  • 2. Draft The working documents for each module
    will be a storyboard (content layout of slides)
    and script (text spoken by video presenters)
  • 3. Revise Draft content will be reviewed by
    clinical community experts and approved by a
    medical advisor

Governance
  • The Pilot of SCI-U will be overseen by a steering
    committee comprised of representatives of the
    partner organizations.
  • A a project team will handle day-to-day project
    management.
  • Working groups formed of SMEs will develop the
    content for each module, with review by a medical
    advisory committee.

  • SCI-U is a partnership between several
    organizations, each contributing according to
    their mandate/area of strength.

Video Presenters
  • Each module will feature video presenters the
    presenter for the beta module is Joanne Smith,
    CBC journalist and former host of Moving On.

Interface
  • The screen interface provides navigational
    controls and links to the modules different
    sections and resources. The look and feel of the
    interface can be easily customized.

PowerPoint
  • The core of each module is a PowerPoint
    presentation (as shown in the main frame in this
    screenshot).

Multimedia
  • Multimedia elements such as pictures, diagrams,
    audio and video clips can be flexibly combined.

  • Context slides accompany the basic information,
    linking it to the patients real life situation.

Quizzes
  • Quizzes reinforce the material covered and allow
    users to test their mastery.

  • How-to guides present practical, illustrated
    information on self-care procedures.
