Reasons for Making Meaningful Connections
  • Helps to gain a deeper understanding and make
sense of what you are reading
  • Allows you to relate to characters, settings, and
    problems in the story
  • Helps you determine the solution in the story and
if you have ever solved a problem in the same
    manner
  • Allows you to relate to the gist or main idea of
    the story
  • Keeps reading focused

Types of Connections
When reading, sometime we make connections to the
text.
  • These connections can be related to books that I
    have read
  • Text-to-Text
  • My personal experiences such as the places I have
gone, things that I have done and things that
have that have happened to me
  • Text-to-Self
  • Things that are happening around me
  • Text-to-World

4
How to get readers to make connections
  • Introduce the book by giving a Book Introduction
( see previous sections on blackboard).
  • As your student is reading, have them pause every
few pages to think of time when something similar
    has happened to them.
  • When they can make a connection, have them tell
what the characters and events in the story
    reminded them of.
  • Have them place a sticky note on the page where
    the connection was made.

How to get readers to make connections
  • When the students have finished reading, together
    complete the following chart.
  • (Click on the chart and then print)

Remember
  • To constantly remind your child that making
    meaningful connections helps us better
    understand the story.
  • Have your child continue to make connections and
fill out the chart. This will help your child
continue to make connections without even
    realizing it.
  • Have fun!!!!
