Title: CAPS Project: A sustainable approach to water surface cleaning (Approved CIP Eco - Innovation Project)
1CAPS Project A sustainable approach to water
surface cleaning(Approved CIP Eco - Innovation
Project)
Mitja Grbec, LL.M. Project Manager Head of
Department TEC Ltd, Technological and
Environmental Centre Slovenia mitja.grbec_at_gmail.co

2Start up company
- TEC Ltd. (TOC d.o.o.) established on the
01.01.2008 - Market oriented company- private institute for
technological, logistic and environmental RD - Transfer of basic research on technological and
industrial levels networking - Company for fuels and biofuels development and
quality assurance - The plan is to become within the next 5 years one
of the leading RD institute for environmental
and green logistics in Southern and Central
Europe
3COMPANY GOALS..
Financing posibilities (international and local
funds, private investors, risk capital).
4CIP Eco Innovation An innovative idea..
- An innovative idea first requirement (new
green production processes, new products or
services and/or management and business
methods..) -
- TEC Ltd. has developed a technology which allows
to recycle the remaining from the paper industry
(PMS) into a highly efficient absorbent material
capable to clean oil and chemical spills in ports
and marinas (HAWSC) - Ports and marinas needs an ecological, cheap and
environmental friendly absorbent for water
surface cleaning - Remaining from the paper industry (Paper Mill
sludge - PMS) represent a considerable
environmental burden (EU cca 4.300.000
tones/year) - Cross - sectoral double environmental and
economic benefit
5 beyond the testing phase..
6..successfully demonstrated and preferably beyond
pilot phase..
7.. .which supports the achievement of EU
environmental policies..
- Decreasing greenhouse emissions
- Decreasing of quantity of PMS (landfilling and
incineration of raw PMS) - Decreasing of production of synthetic absorbents
(PMS recycling and replacing the synthetic
material with natural one) - High efficiency incineration of used HAWSC
(higher calorific value of used HAWSC) - After incineration new kind of inorganic
(meta-caolin) absorbent is produced (Longer LCA)
8 ex. decreasing of GHGs, recycling of waste,
longer LCA
9..with potential for market replication and
positive economic impact on EU enterprises..
- CAPS Project allows cost reduction for paper
industry due to waste quantity reduction (direct
cost reduction, lowering the environmental taxes) - Cost reduction for ports, oil industry and
tourism - (lower costs for ports and marinas for water
surface cleaning, particularly in case of an
accidental release..)
10From the idea to the project and EU co- financing
....
- Assess whether your project has an EU dimension
- Search for opportunities in existing European
programmes - Distinguish between different funding programmes
and its borderlines (ex. IEE, LIFE, DG RTD, Eco-
Innovation..) - Check priority areas
11CAPS Eco- Innovation
- Eco- Innovation suitable to co- finance the
activities and objectives of CAPS - First replication and market uptake
- Fits into a priority area (recycling and
materials..) - Technology and final product beyond testing phase
- A clear benefit in support of EUs environmental
policies - Potential for market replication and wider EU
application (EU added value..) -
12..your partners (Consortium)..
- Select partners which are complementary to you
with regards skills and assets and which gives
you a clear added value - Clearly define their role within the project
- Geographical aspect (area to be covered)
- Previous experience in EU funded projects
- Form the consortium well in advance
- Involve your partners in the preparation of the
proposal - Get letters of support from interested
stakeholders and potential users -
13..How we prepared the proposal..
- Without particular problems (Read carefully Call
for Applications Guide for Proposers) - Recommendations for potential applicants
- (CIP Eco- innovation)
- - Contact EACI with regard your idea
- Clearly define project parameters (set realistic
goals) - Emphasize the EU dimension of the project
- See eligible costs (ex. only depreciation costs
for equipment, average salaries, other costs..) - - Provide a break down of each category of
eligible costs, - Establish a clear link between estimated costs
and the innovative action
14..negotiation period..
- - Communication of short listed
projects08.02.2009, - - End of negotiation21.04.2009
- Main point to be clarified
- Budget clarification of cost for equipment and
personnel and its relevance for the innovative
action - Exact project parameters (also after the project
period) - Further explanation of the technical aspect of
the project - Further explanation about the role of our partner
(Kareg Engineers, Finland) in the project
implementation
15AIMS TO BE ACHIEVED..
- - Project Period 36 Months
- CAPS aims at the industrialisation and market
replication of the new technology throughout the
EU - Two production lines and centres Slovenia-
Finland, 20.000 tones capacity PMS each. That
would cover only 2 of the EU potential demand
for such absorbent (REALISTIC TARGET) - Long- term we aim to achieve a 20 share on the
EU market - Support from ports and yacht marinas (Port of
Koper real life tests, Trieste, Venice,
Valencia, Helsinki..) and from the paper
industry in Slovenia and Finland
16Real- life tests in the Port of Koper (Letter of
support..)
