YOUTH COUNCIL 2004-2005
Twenty-six members of Taylorsville City Youth
Council were announced at City Council Meeting on
Wednesday, October 20, 2004 Alexandra Schwind,
Andrew McCormick, Camy Khuu, Christina Knight,
Danielle Potter, Emily Barwick, Emily Siwachok,
Heather Burgoyne, Hilarie Denos, Jamie McBeth,
Jennifer Akagi, Jessica Wright, Kalolaine Palei,
Ksenia Konkina, Lacey Powell, Laura Blevins, Lila
Faumuina, Lisa Chan, Margaret Vu, Mathias
Gardner, Melody Smith, Roger Clements, Sharlene
Witt, Talita De Alencar, Tamara Cope, and Vy
(Sue) Tran.

SERVICE PROJECTS DURING 2005(YOUTH COUNCIL
2004-2005)
  • City Counterpart Assignment
  • Provided Entertainment and Interaction at Kearns
    Childrens Center
  • Valentines Project at Golden Living Center
  • Breakout Presentation at USU Conference
  • Easter Egg Hunt Service Project at Two Parks
  • Presentations to 10 Elementary Schools (Self
    Esteem-Positive Attitude)
  • Substituted for Youth Ambassadors on City Float
    when needed and also assisted as float walkers
  • Taylorsville Dayzz Service at City Booth, Lions
    Club Breakfast, Recreation Center Open House,
    Helped at Park, and Assisted with Evening
    Security

DAY WITH THE LEGISLATURE 2005
  • Youth Council members participated in Day with
    the Legislature, sponsored by Utah League of
    Cities and Towns. The event was held at the Salt
    Lake Sheraton Centre in January 2005.
  • Following a morning of special speakers, Youth
    Council joined State and City elected officials
    for lunch.

ATTITUDE REFLECTS LEADERSHIP
  • An old man walked up a shore littered with
    thousands of starfish, beached and dying after a
    storm. A young man was picking them up and
    flinging them back into the ocean.
  • Why do you bother? the old man scoffed.
    Youre not saving enough to make a difference.
  • The young man picked up another starfish and
    sent it spinning back to the water. Made a
    difference to that one, he said.
  • We can make a difference, every day!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS
  • Youth Council created and presented programs on
    Self Esteem and Worthwhile Activities to students
    at ten elementary schools in the Taylorsville
    area.

EASTER EGG HUNT SERVICE PROJECT
  • On March 26, 2005, Youth Council members
    assisted in spreading out Easter candy at two
    parks (Valley Regional Park and T. John Labrum
    Park) in Taylorsville.

TAYLORSVILLE DAYZZ
  • Youth Council members provided service at
    Taylorsville Dayzz in the City Booth, Lions Club
    Breakfast, Taylorsville Recreation Center Open
    House and assisted with chairs, awnings and
    evening security at Valley Regional Park.

CITY FLOAT PARADES
When needed, Youth Council members substituted
for Youth Ambassadors on City float and assisted
as float walkers.

ROTARY CLUB SERVICE PROJECT
  • Youth Council put stickers in and on dictionaries
    for all 3rd graders in Taylorsville.
  • The dictionaries were provided by the Rotary Club.

ELECTION FLYERS SERVICE PROJECT
  • Youth Council passed out municipal election
    information flyers in Taylorsville.
  • (The design on the top half of the page included
    a motto
  • suggested by a 2004-2005 Youth Council member.)

THANKSGIVING SERVICE PROJECT
  • Youth Council collected food donations to provide
  • Thanksgiving food boxes which they took to four
    needy families.

ANNUAL SATURDAY WITH SANTA EVENT
  • SANTA VISITS TAYLORSVILLE
  •  
  •   Santa took time out of his busy schedule to
    visit with tiny tots at four locations in
    Taylorsville on Saturday, December 3, 2005. He
    traveled to Big Kmart (3835 West 5400 South) at
    noon, Harmons (5454 South Redwood Road) at
    100, and Wal-Mart (5469 South Redwood Road) at
    200. His fourth stop was the Taylorsville/Bennio
    n Heritage Center (1488 West 4800 South).
  •  
  •   Santa rode in a Unified Fire Authority truck,
    escorted by Taylorsville City Police Department
    officers. He was assisted by City of
    Taylorsville elected officials, Taylorsville City
    Youth Ambassadors and City Youth Council. His
    helpers, City of Taylorsville youth volunteers,
    handed out complimentary candy canes and holiday
    greetings.
  •  
  • The City youth volunteers took photos of
    children with Santa, as a fund raiser for their
    service and training activities. The photo
    holder featured logos of the City and each
    participating location.
  •

  • Youth Council decorated the Citys Christmas tree.

CITY COUNTERPART ASSIGNMENT
  • Each Youth Council member is assigned an adult
    counterpart in the City to interview and learn
    about the job of the elected or appointed
    official, City employee or a volunteer on one of
    the Citys committees. Then the Youth Council
    member gives a report at Youth Council meeting.
    In this way, the Youth Council members learn more
    about the City and its functions.

GUEST SPEAKERS
  • Youth Council has learned about goals and
    priorities from City Council member Les Matsumura
    and about the City budget from Gerry Orr, City
    Director of Finance.

They do make a difference!
  • Taylorsville City Youth Council members are
    involved in service clubs, sports, music, and
    some are high school officers. We appreciate
    all that they do in their homes, churches, and
    the community.
