  • All of us have different skills. In sports,
  • special skills are required to perform well and
  • effectively.
  • Task In your own words, write a sentence to
    describe the meaning of skill.

Definition of Skill
  • The learned ability to bring about
    pre-determined results with maximum certainty
    Often with the minimum outlay of time energy or
    both

Think about these phrases
  • Learned ability. Skill is something you learn.
    You are not born with it. You improve with
    practice
  • Pre-determined result.You have an aim you set out
    to achieve
  • Maximum certainty. You are very likely to be
    successful. A skilful athlete can perform a
    movement successfully time after time.
  • Maximum efficiency. You perform the movement
    smoothly, without wasting any energy or time.

Skill /Techniques
  • A skill describes the purpose of linked sequences
    of movement.
  • Technique describes the way of performing a
    skill. For example swimming would be a skill,
    the technique of swimming would be front crawl,
    back crawl or breaststroke.

Basic and complex skills
  • Running, jumping and floating on your back in the
    water are examples of simple or basic skills.
  • Other motor skills are complex. Meaning skills
    which are difficult to master. For instance,
    tennis serve, the high jump and the butterfly in
    swimming.
