Title: The Creative Curriculum

1
The Creative Curriculum
  • Planning learning

2
What do the children want from lessons?
  • To be excited
  • To know why we are studying certain subjects
  • To know why we are taught separate subjects when
    life is integrated
  • For lessons to be different
  • To be more involved and not have to sit listening
    for too long
  • To go outside whenever possible

3
Planning exciting lessons
  • How will the children record their work ?
  • what combinations of children will be used
  • how children will make choices and contribute
    their voice
  • we all learn in different ways, have we offered
something to appeal to all styles of learners?
collaborative initially planned and outlined by
us then shared with the class, inviting their
    learning questions and proposals

4
Introducing new topics with a bang!
  • If were not excited by teaching a new topic the
    children wont be
  • Start a topic with a guest speaker
  • Play a news report real or made-up
  • Look at a small part of a blown-up photo
  • Reveal some clues from a bag
  • Read an imaginary letter from a
    celebrity/organisation asking the children to
    help them with some research
  • Encourage the children to start asking questions

5
Planning exciting activities
  • Invent a machine that would have put out the
    great fire of London
  • Hold a trial with the baker and a town planner
    class act as jury
  • Compare the fire of London to the fires in L.A
  • Write a letter to Sir Christopher Wren advising
him how to redesign the new buildings he is
    planning in London

6
Delivery delusion
  • We should aim to move away from the delivery
delusion. We should avoid the thought of
delivering facts to thinking of our roles as
developing skills and allowing the children to
plan a more active role in their own learning

7
Classroom learning
  • Is it active?
  • Are the children invited and helped to
  • plan their approach to any activity
  • Review the activity
  • Think ahead to other situations and apply it to a
real world context why am I learning this?

8
Creativity should become part of everyday school
life ?
  • Have an open ended question of the week that
children go home and think about and plan time to
    discuss it
  • Set research projects for homework
  • Aim for a classroom atmosphere where excellence
    is celebrated
  • Challenge ourselves to bring learning to life
