  • Norway has often been isolated from major
    European cultural trends and developments. Yet a
    strong culture was flourishing here from at least
    the ninth century.
  • The young norvegian state has a particularly
    significant history as a maritime nation. They
    retained their own conspicous traditions despite
    of various historical events, which, with the
    cultural impuls of other countries, have resulted
    a unique diversity. Its manifestated in the
    Norwegian music, literature, art, and also in the
    landscape of the country.

Folk Music
  • The Norwegian cultures essential item is the
    traditional national costume, called bunad,
    which is worn with pride on every special
    occasions and fests .
  • In the development of the Norwegian folk music
    the Saami, which were the indigenous people of
    Norway, had an important part.
  • Norwegian folk music both vocal and
    instrumental, is usually performed by soloists.
    Instrumental music is most commons played on
    the fiddle or on the Hardanger fiddle, which is
    considered the national instrument of Norway.
  • The country has an unbroken folk music tradition.
    Since folk music has been passed along
    continously from generation to generation.

Popular Music
  • Today, Norwegian pop, rock, hip-hop, metal, RB
    and electronica are more popular than ever.
  • Thanks to a multitude of other active bands and
    new record companies, more is going on in
    Norwegian popular music than ever before.
  • Norway has a large and active rock scene.
    High-volume bands, like Kaizers Orchestra,
    Madrugada, Serena Maneesh, Motorpsycho and
    Turbonegro have a solid position in Norway, and
    increase their popularity abroad with every
    successful tour.
  • Norwegian pop music boasts a number of gifted and
    distinctive songwriters and performers, including
    Bertine Zetlitz, Sondre Lerche, Maria Mena and
    Ephemera.
  • The electronica scene is dominated by the biggest
    current name among Norwegian music exports
    Röyksopp.
  • Norwegian hip-hop is characterised by a strong
    Norwegian-language scene, which includes such

Literature Nobel Laureates
  • The Norwegian Literature has many excellent
    authors in every parts of it.
  • Between 1903 and 1928 3 Norwegian authors were
    awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
  • Bjornson won the 1903 Nobel Prize, hed been
    followed by KnutHamsun in 1920.
  • Norways third Nobel laureate is Sigrid Undset,
    who received the Nobel Prize in 1928.

Contemporary - and Childrens Literature
  • Norwegian contemporary literature has gained a
    popular following both at home and abroad. Some
    of the best-known current authors are Jostein
    Garder, Erik Fosnes Hansen and Lars Saabye
    Christensen .
  • Close to 30 contemporary Norwegian writers
    have been translated into more than ten different
    languages.
  • Literature for children and young people first
    emerged as an independent genre during the 1700s.
    Even folk and fairy tales were not originally
    intended for children, and first became regarded
    as childrens literature during the 1800s. The
    first reader for children was printed in 1798.
  • One of the traditional headfigure of the
    Norwegian tales is the Troll.
