Philosophy
  • Career Orientation is an introduction to the
    world of work course providing students with a
    realistic picture of themselves through
    self-awareness assessments and occupational
    awareness providing students with a brief
    overview of possible careers and the path it
    requires to reach their goals.

TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have valid secondary or middle school
    teaching license and must complete the six (6)
    required endorsement hours prior to teaching CO a
    second year.

  • Hands-on Activities for Career Orientation
  • Counselors must be certified and must have
    completed Hands-on Activities for endorsement
  • Programs which do not have endorsed instructors
    will not be eligible for Workforce Education or
    federal Carl Perkins funds.

APPROVAL PROCEDURE
  • Print the licensure application form from the
    Dept of Education websitearkansased.org
  • Complete the form to add the Career Orientation
    endorsement with
  • Teacher name
  • E-mail address
  • Teacher address
  • Social security number
  • School/District
  • Licensure Code -- 411
  • Licensure Area -- Career Orientation

TEACHER APPROVAL
  • Universities do not provide the approval for
    Career Orientation. The approval request must
    come from the teacher to the Office of Career
    Guidance, Exploration, and Preparation.
  • If you do not request the approval from ADWE,
    your school will be cited as having an unapproved
    instructor for CO.

ENDORSEMENT PROCEDURE
  • Mail the application with your transcript to the
    Dept of Workforce Education.
  • After review, approval will be forwarded to ADE
    to be added to your license.
  • We will mail a copy of our endorsement letter to
    you and your school.

OBJECTIVE
  • Career Orientation is a foundation course for all
    Workforce Education programs of study. It must
    be offered to all students at the seventh or
    eighth grade level for a minimum of one semester.
  • Career Orientation is a hands-on, activity based
    class in which students explore the world of work
    in the 16 Occupational Clusters.

Career Orientation Framework
  • The current framework for Career Orientation was
    adopted in 2005.
  • An end-of-course assessment provided by the Dept
    of Workforce Education must be given to all
    students at the end course and results will be
    sent to the department.

Curriculum
  • Teachers must follow the framework, but the
    curriculum can be developed according to regional
    workforce needs, teacher knowledge and skills,
    district programs of study, school facilities and
    equipment, and student interests.

COURSE EMPHASIS
  • Occupational and educational terminology
  • Self-awareness in relation to the students
    interests, life values, work values, attitude,
    personality, and desired lifestyle.
  • Career research using every resource and
    opportunity available
  • Decision-making, goal setting, and planning
  • Employability skills
  • Education and training requirements

STUDENTS
  • Prepare a portfolio with a Career Action Plan
    (CAP) updated annually.
  • Maintain a folder/binder to organize and maintain
    their work.
  • Compete in state competitions.
  • Assess their knowledge, interests, personality,
    and aptitudes to make rational decisions for the
    future.

  • Teachers are required to attend in-service in
    order to receive Carl Perkins funds for program
    improvement activities.

Teacher Information System
