Effective Grant Proposals
  • Since school began you have probably thought at
    least once, Gosh, I wish my classroom had that
    or maybe A great project for my students to do
    would be… If you had that second thought, you
    are already on your way to being a successful
    grant writer! RFPs (Request For Proposals)
    ALWAYS focus on supporting projects to enhance
    learning instead of classroom stuff. If you
    are thinking of stuff your classroom needs, you
    are going about the process backwards.

  • Have a project in mind before you begin the
    grant.
  • Grants focus on projects/, not stuff.
  • The stuff helps you accomplish the project
    objective.

  • State the need
  • Identify your solution
  • State goals and expected outcomes
  • Have evaluation plan/measurement tool
  • Provide detailed budgets

  • Are student-centered
  • Focus on realistic student achievement
  • Describes how this project is DIFFERENT from what
    you are currently doing.

  • Follow all guidelines in the RFP
  • Includes research that supports the program
  • Are proofread. Spelling and grammar mistakes may
    cause rejections.

  • The following guidelines are specific to the
    Drew Grant, but most are applicable to any grant

Guideline D Purchases
  • Educational purposes only
  • Not for religious or social service programs
  • No administrative costs as salaries, travel
    expenses, staff seminars, etc.
  • No ink or paper

Guideline L Publicity
  • Should any donation, contribution, or other
    assistance be provided by the H. C. Drew Estate,
    recipient hereby acknowledges and agrees that no
    publicity or other release of information
    pertaining to such grant will be made without the
    specific written permission of the Trustees of
    the Estate. Persons involved with the entity
    receiving a grant, however, may be apprised of
    such. For example, announcements of awards are
    authorized to be made to staff, faculty,
    students, clients, and/or to be published in
    newsletters. The intent of this provision is to
    prevent release of grant information to media or
    other outside organizations without Trustee
    permission.

Guideline L Publicity
  • Do not contact the Drew Estate or the Drew
    Trustees if changes need to be made on purchased
    goods and or supplies.
  • Do not call the Drew Estate concerning your
    grant.
  • All correspondence must go through the CPSS Grant
    Department.
