28DESTRUCTIVE INTRACTABLE CONFLICT is
29THE PRINCIPAL THREAT TO HUMAN WELFARE
30LARGE SCALE VIOLENCE
31(No Transcript)
32IS THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE FORCE ON THE PLANET
33t
In the 20th Century
34there were 175,000,000 Conflict
Deaths (Military civilian casualties, genocide,
tyranny, and man-made famine) 4.5 of World
Population.
35Since World War II there have been 20,000,000 Bat
tle Deaths in 25 International Wars 127 Civil
Wars.
36What will the 21st Century bring?
37Future perfect storm conflicts could easily be
more horrific.
38Tensions between global power centers are rising.
39Societys high -tech infrastructure is extremely
vulnerable.
40Weapons of mass destruction are becoming widely
available.
41Low-tech warfare can still produce catastrophic
and even genocidal results.
42Destructive conflict dynamics also
43prevent us from meeting other critical
challenges.
44We cant CONTROL AIDS
45without dealing with conflicts over sex, sex
education, and religious belief.
46We cant deal with GLOBAL WARMING
47without finding ways to overcome our addiction
to fossil fuels and energy industry resistance.
48We cant fight POVERTY
49without addressing the debate over who is
responsible and what can and should be done?
50Unfortunately, our research and
development-oriented society
51invests almost nothing in the development
of better ways of handling conflict.
52Instead, we sacrifice millions of lives and spend
countless billions
53playing the same old destructive game.
54We must find realistic ways
55to change the game.
56We need to start by applying what we know
57...and finding out what we dont.
58 Success will require a high degree of
specialization
59with large numbers of individuals and
organizations
60each making important and very different
contributions.
61Individuals from many institutions, cultures,
disciplines
62will need to focus on the challenges that lie
within their areas of expertise.
63People are very reluctant to change the ways in
which they approach conflict.
64Success will not come easily, or quickly.
65 But we will never succeed if we dont start
taking these challenges seriously.
66The challenge of working toward peace is as
important as Global Warming. It deserves the same
level of our attention.
