  • Allows the patients head to be
  • put into neutral alignment

Removal procedure
  • Explain to patient what you intend to do
  • Explain that untrained spectators will
  • advise do not take helmets off
  • You are properly trained and will protect
  • their spine
  • Two trained staff are required for this
  • manoeuvre

  • First person
  • Kneels above patients head
  • Holds each side of the helmet
  • Curls fingers over helmets lower margin
  • Immobilises head in neutral alignment
  • (as near as helmet allows)
  • Uses jaw as support rather than helmet

  • Second person
  • Kneels alongside torso
  • Checks airway and breathing
  • Undoes or cuts chin strap
  • Takes control of the patients jaw
  • Places other hand on patients occiput
  • Takes over in line immobilization

  • First person
  • Takes hold of each side of the helmet
  • Pulls the sides of the helmet apart
  • Rotates the helmet so that it clears the
  • patients nose
  • Carefully pulls the helmet upwards
  • Rotates helmet forward following the
  • curve of the head
  • Takes the helmet off completely
  • Retakes control of the head maintains in-line
    immobilisation

  • Applies cervical collar
  • NB Remember one pair of hands should
  • maintain in line immobilisation at all times
  • during and AFTER collar is applied
