Title: Moving Forward
1Moving Forward
- Jim Siegrist, Berkeley
- ALCPG Meeting
- January 10, 2004
2Outline
- Outreach
- LC Cosmos connection
- LC recent progress
- Next steps for the experimentalists
- Summary
3New Paradigm on Outreach
- We are tuning our message to connect to our
intended audiences, not so it sounds good to us. - This is essential to build a solid foundation of
support for the field/LC that will surpass
administration boundaries/personalities. - Concerns you may share
- The approach does not highlight my favorite
physics gt dishonest - The approach might not work
LC participants have been in the lead in the new
thinking- you must reach out to the rest of the
community and convince others!
4LC Cosmos Connection
- We know from feedback from Congress and the
public that connecting our physics to the cosmos
sells. - We know, for example, you dont sell cars just by
the fact they are carsits what the public
wants.
We need to exploit the Cosmos Connection!
5LC-Cosmos ConnectionExample 1 Dark Matter
- Many of us know SUSY is right, and the lightest
neutralino is the big-bang relic that is the Dark
Matter.
- This is a great example of the LC-Cosmos
connection we can agree upon - to understand if the relic particle production
makes sense, a complete picture of particle
species interactions are needed at decoupling
Dark Matter
- detailed measurements of dark matter particle
candidate properties at LHC/LC are needed to put
the picture on a firm foundation - underground experiments to directly detect the
local halo will (eventually) confirm the picture - gravitational lensing studies will map the
large-scale dark matter distribution complete
the picture
SUSY provides a comfortable theoretical framework
that allows us to speak with authority feel the
connection is genuine.
6LC-Cosmos ConnectionExample 2 Dark Energy
- In the case of Dark Energy, no viable theoretical
framework exists. - We have to understand that this makes the
situation more exciting to the public
illustrates the limits of what we dont know.
- In my (experimentalist) opinion
- we dont understand the vacuum
- on the short scales, Higgs mechanism, acts
condensate filling the vacuum - on large scales, dark energy, acts funny
property of the vacuum, possibly just ? - These might be related!
The lack of any theoretical guidance cannot keep
us from exploiting the excitement!
7A Return to Normal Science?
- We have no coherent model for gravity and QM.
- Clear standard model cannot accommodate what we
see on the large scales. - Important questions are on the horizon that well
soon answer.
Experimentalists their tools take the lead in
this situation - reminiscent of the pre-standard
model era (I was very young)
Embrace the change!Transmit our excitement to
the public!
8Recent LC Developments
- LC highest ranked mid-term priority by Secretary
of Energy - Important for long-term stability
- Moving toward an international organization
- Sanctioned by agencies, a crucial step on the
path ahead - Making a technology decision
- Necessary prerequisite for a focused, coherent,
worldwide effort - Steps toward a central design group
- Next crucial step toward realization of LC
We have navigated the transition from an idea to
an actual path forward on the LC it is now our
project to win or lose!
9Next Steps for the LC Experimentalists
- Work with accelerator experts if at all possible
for you. - We must bring accelerator science back to the
Universities. - Its where the bulk of the costs will be in the
project need a broad base of expertise. - High luminosity gt integrated accelerator/experime
nt - Its fun, exciting, and now.
- Work with the outreach effort (Interactions.org
site has a lot of info). - Talk in your department about particle physics.
- Talk in your community to the public.
- Train yourself in how to be a better public
speaker. - Its fun and rewarding.
These contributions are essential for the success
of LC (and the field)!
10Next Steps (2) Detector Designs
- Have the high level (energy, luminosity) LC
accelerator specification agreed to by the
international organization. - Detector builders must now flow down high level
science requirements to the design of individual
detector components. - Each design choice needs a firm connection to
benchmark physics processes. - Necessary, but not sufficient, to pass eventual
hardball reviews. - Necessary to give agencies/OMB confidence in the
depth of our understanding. - An understanding of how LC-Cosmos connection
works also needed in more detail but might not
drive the detector design.
We need well-documented solid analyses. Opinions
alone are not enough.
11Next Steps (3) Who will do the work?
- Really a lot of full simulation work is needed to
characterize the benchmark processes. - Likely to be carried out by lots of part-time
people, especially students. - Prefer to see a low-overhead organization so
that people can get up to speed quickly and make
real contributions. - US efforts need to be coherently showcased
especially at the international meetings (e.g.
LCWS Paris April 04) if the US is to advocate a
leadership role in LC work.
Doing this effectively is a major challenge for
international LC the US effort.
12Comment on Detector RD
- Agencies are starting to fund a modest level of
detector RD. - Detector can be realized with technologies we
know about now. - Given the time scales, some effort on far-out
technologies seems appropriate.
- However, the clock is running, and design choices
will be needed in the next few years
As on the accelerator, we need to position
ourselves to make the tough choices coming up!
13Summary
- Be the vanguard of community connectivity
- Exploit the cosmos connection shamelessly
- Be proud of the Standard Model, but move on
- Contribute to LC Accelerator RD
- Contribute to outreach activities
- Do the homework on detector requirements
and be open to Divine intervention.

good path forward!
